I've been lurking here for a few days since I decided to buy a Snap Server. I bought a Dell Powervault 701n (which I understand is essentially a Snap Server 2000) on Ebay. I received the unit today, and it looks great, but unfortunately it turns out it a Japanese version. I will probably return it (since it wasn't advertised as a Japanese version), but I was hoping there would be a way to convert it to an english model. There isn't a way to change the language somehow is there?

I have been able to reset it to the factory configuration, and I can see two shares. It appears that everything is working as it should (if you could read Japanese).

Using the Assist utility, I tried to upgrade the OS to the latest version shown on the Dell site (3.4.790) in hopes that the upgrade would also change the language to English. Unfortunately, it won't accept the upgrade. Rereading the Dell site, I now see that the upgrade is only for 3.xxx to 3.4.790. My configuration is as follows:

Software 2.4.441
Hardware 2.0.0
Bios 2.0.282

Is there any hope that if I can find the right files to upgrade from 2.x to 3.x that the unit would then be in english, or should I just try to send it back? If there is hope, does anybody know where I could get the 2.x to 3.x sup file.

Thanks,
Dave

Well Yes,
There is a setting as to which language you want. I will have to dig it up as to what menu puttons to select. And it will only work if the other languages are installed. You should upgrade to v 3.4.803 software too.

Thanks, I would really appreciate if you could check into it for me. I wish I was more familiar with the web interface, so I could navigate the various menus without being able to read them. The coolest thing would be if the language could be changed using a debug command, since I can easily get to that.

And it will only work if the other languages are installed. You should upgrade to v 3.4.803 software too

Where would the language files have to be installed? There is nothing on the drives that I can see. There is a WWW folder on the Share 1 and both shares have a hidden Recoverd folder on them. All of these folders are empty. I didn't get any software or documentation with this unit. Also, where could I get the file(s) to upgrade to 3.4.803?

Thanks again,
Dave

Os i will sort

if you go to
http://snapserver ip/config/debug

type bios International

Mine shows 'Pseudoflash exists, so this is an internationalizable box.'

If you get the same you are fine

try

bios International enable english

Webpage i think dave is after

http://snap ip/config?Func=LanguageSupportSend

First box, there should be an option for English US

Thanks for the great info.

However, when I type Bios International, I get "International Bit currently is disabled." Is there a way to enable this?

Using the web page approach leads me to pages that I can't read, and I am therefore afraid to try anything.

Thanks again for all the help guys,
Dave

http://snap ip/config?Func=LanguageSupportSend

The first drop down box is what you need to change

Try a few different options

Then one button is apply

You may get it into german or something, but at least it would be easier to work with

The 2nd box can be changed when you have got to an understandable option

Well, I was able to enable the international bios ("bios international enable"). Now when I type "bios international" I get

International Bit currently is enabled
A language needs to be chosen. Languages available for OEM type Quantum are:
US English

This seems like progress, but when I type "Bios international enable US English" I get:

Partial command entered, one of:
bios International enable/disable language choice

------------
Command returned with console error -2

Obviously, I am missing the syntax somehow?

any ideas?

Another Option,

Login to the admin page "http://snapaddress"
If a popup happens it is asking for password, right box = OK
click on the 2nd menu down is "Server settings"
click on the 3rd menu down = Language Support
Pull down menu Select english.
The second pull down is character set, Select US English (437)
clik apply at bottom right.

YEah, that is basically the way to do it, just i posted the link for the direct thingy

I think that may only be the bios international unlock

Hey guys, thanks for all the help. It dawned on me yesterday that the international bios thing must not be my problem. The bios is already in english (it is actually the only language available for the bios). Its the OS thats the problem. So I would really appreciate it if either of you could send me the 2.x to 3.x OS upgrade.

Thanks again for all your efforts to help.

If the character set is not correct. It can be changed. It is the previous instuctions:
Server Settings, 3rd menu. There are only 3 optons ENGLISH (437).

You guys are awesome. Thanks so much for the help. Thanks to you, my Japanese Powervault 701n is now an English Snap Server 2000 with 3.4.803.

After I got the new OS installed last night, I set the two 80-gig drives up as Raid 1 and let it work while I slept. This morning, its all done and working perfectly.

So, I need to have 4.x to use disks larger than 137gb? I won't be upgrading the size of the disks real soon, so I didn't go to 4.x at this time, but I will want to eventually.

Thanks again for all your help.

Hmm

Sometimes 4.0.830 hinders it, other times it helps. But it seems to generally help

If you want to try on V3, do so with a newer version of V3

Yes, from what I've read in these forums, it seems that 3.4.805 provides the large disk support. I might want to just go with that since I don't need the Active Directory or Windows 2003 Server support .
