I don't live in th USA, but I suppose radioshack does sell them. They are basically a iron core with a lot of wire around them...

Yeah any electronics store like radio shack etc. should sell a range of toroidal transformers. The main advantage over standard transformers seems to be size and weight, though I believe they have different EMI characteristics too.
