Patch
04-12-2006, 12:03 AM
I had for free :dome: a snap server 4200 ,
it was free but without disks, without CD.
I would like to make it work but I can't find anywhere a place where is possible to download a version for 4200 for free. Anyone can help me   ?

A version of GuardianOS Should be on original CD (that I don't have)
Any help is appreciated

Hi All,

First of all sorry I used this topic to post because for some reasons, I can't start a new post!

I have got a Snap Sever 4200 which is used for backup purpose.

Whilst doing the back up the other day, I saw a report saying that there is a media error.

When check the disk with disk utilitie, I have got a message saying
File System Check: FSCK fatal error = 39 Disk 1
File System Check: Bad state 0 for inode I = 4065440 Disk 1

When I try to access to the server via IP address,
I can see that all three folders are shown as *off line*. Therefore, I can't access it from the short cut drive. But I can still go into the administration mode and still do the disk utilities.

Please can someone help me out on this. How can I get the disk back to normal. The way I see is if the Disk 1 has got a problem, I should be able to save my data on other disks.

I would really appreciate if someone can get back to this post.

Thanks
Tin

What version are you currently running?

If i remember correctly you need at lease one of the original drives in the disk 0. The OS is stored on the drive not in memory.

When i upgraded my 4400 I had to do it with the original drive in place. I installed a 2nd drive formatted it then pulled the original drive and replaced it with the newly formatted drive. It did its magic and was alive with 1 new drive. then i added the rest of the drives.

I think this is going back a while and ive worked on many snap/nas's since then.

For Re3Dboy

Version ? I've no original disks for my 4200, no version at all , only 1 unformatted HD at the moment. I cannot do any upgrade ... since I don't have a version to upgrade from !!!

Thanks anyway !

webboy, do you know how much disk space the boot tracks and/or OS require?

I have not worked on any of the newer models. We generally only get 4000, 4100's with SnapOS.

patch:
If webboy is correct you will need a 4400 image file with the boot track, or maybe a 4200 will work. And use the same technique we use with a std boot loader. With the Guardian OS full version taking over 100+ meg, the boot tracks may take 150+meg.

tta013: You can see the folders but can not connect? yes
Do you have admin rights?
You could reset the Admin PW if needed with out changing any others.

Havent played with a 4200 but i can only assume its the same as a 4400. While the machine is powered up press the reset button. Server will reboot into maintence mode. Hit it from the web page there you will/should have the option to reset the entire machine and also load the os from a file.

Now to just get the file. I will see if i can extract my os off a 4400 as im about to replace all the drives in the 4400 i just got.

Sorry to say my 4400's are running 2.6.050 OS version.

I have no idea How many tracks the os takes but i think its 11 megs on each drive.

Can any one supply a Guardian os version 3 and 4? I think weve just about done all we can with the snap 1000, 2000,4000 and 4100's. With 4200 and 4400 poping up its time to start to exploit these machines. Christ i even have a 18000 now.

Patch if worse comes to worse you could sent me your drive and i can format it in my 4400 then send the drive back to you and see if that works...

Just a thought...

Webboy did you mean 11 meg/track. Or total.

I believe it was 11 meg track per disk for a total of 44 megs. i will look again when the machine is booted back up (sometime today hopefully). I have other pc/devices on the work bench now.

Dear Webboy,
You mean you are able to create a working boot disk for snapserver 4200-4500?
I think this is great!

Sending you a disk may be my last resource ... but, would you create a boot disk and just send me the image , I mean using ghost, acronis true image.....

I think this would be much faster:nod:

The guardian OS takes close to 200 meg. The OS image file for updateing is 112meg, compressed. I hope it's not scatering the data to different parts of the drvie. Need to use a program that does a RAW copy. Ghost in the past has had problems with then Snap OS.

There is no boot disk available for these devices. Im in the process of trying to image the drive. in the mean time i can format a drive in my machine and send it back to you.

If you can do this, and you are sure that it would work, I think that you could use dd to copy it on a file, compress it and.... that's done! :D

Do anyone of you have the GuardianOS image? I am in the same situation as patch, and need an os for my 4200.

Hmmm, I wonder how long that link will last before;

A) Adaptec has a pissy fit and sends their lawyers

-OR-

B) An Admin deletes the post for legal reasons

As a Side note, you will notice the age of all of those revisions, making none of them usefull for current OSes, protocols, and so forth... You need 4.2.054 and above to have a useful system in todays environments. They also won't help for a system that has no OS on it since you will have no way to install them. :evilaugh:

Nice try though, I give an A for effort... :D

And besides the OS will not load without having a working unit.

yeah i know,

i was just bored haha. didnt really think it would do much.

i migrated away from snap ages ago. although i use one 4200 just for backup2disk,

just upgraded from 160gbx4 to 500gbx4. funny if you #top in ssh you can see just a single copy process to it uses 50%CPU.. crazy.. cool to have 1.8TB free though.

i guess anyone with some basic google skills can find them
