I have owned a M1000 since it was new. After reading this forum I thought I might upgrade the server and need some help.

I can not find the install and assist disk, where do I get these?

I also need the OS upgrade.

What upgrade do I need?

Thanks.

Steve

Assist can be downloaded from Adaptec's website...

The OS is a different story. The OS is copyright and not a free upgrade. You need warranty support to get the OS (by buying a warranty package for $199). If you call them, they -MAY- provide you OS v3.4.807 for free.

If you plan on doing a drive upgrade, remember, you are going ot have to image your old drive over to the new one (see the FAQs).

Hey thanks.

I looked on their site and don't see where the download is...

Does my OS have to be a certain version to run the download?

If it's a real old version it has to go through several steps, 1 to 2 , 2 to 3 or 4. If its a v1 or 2 you need to use a latency OS (Win98) to upgrade it with assist.

Click on the snap Appliance Logo in the main admin page and post it's vitals. The we can give you more info on what you will need.

Nope, They made the OS pretty universal. For your purposes the standard 3.4.807 should work fine. If you get lucky and have one of the old Flashram 1000's then the drive swap will be EASY. Otherwise it is a bit of a pain having to image over the OS pertition using linux. Although not impossable. I did it with my 1100. I just dislike going into my PC case unless i HAVE to. lol.

Uninstall the hard drive and see if the server still boots and you can access the webmin. If you can then all you need to do is throw in a larger drive. You will want OS 3.4.805 or higher first though.

Version 2.2 OS requires that you use Assist to upgrade the OS. I also think you must use a latency OS (Win98) with Assist for it to talk properly to the Snap.

I would recommend upgrading to v3.4 before going to v4. If your 1000 only has 32 meg I may not even go to v 4. But it will run on most.

I thought some version of 3.o would be the way to go.....

I still can not find my assist disk and I don't see it on adaptec's website, any help here or ideas??

Thanks

Well, you used to be able to download assist from their website, but it does look like it's gone now...

Get ahold of their customer service... They should be able to help you...

I've got a SnapServer 1000 without a drive. (Originally purchased new 2/29/2000.) It failed a long time ago. What kind of hard drive does this box take — IDE/ATA/SCSI? What's the largest I can put in this? I think I understand from this site that all I need to do is install the new drive and wait for it to be recognized by the flash ram (rom) inside the motherboard in the case. Right or wrong? Thanks for your help. John

They take IDE drives

As for the size - it depends on the hardware and bios revisions, and to an extent, the software revision

Tsk tsk tsk...

Okay let me correct him. That is true, but you may also not have the OS in a Flashram. If the OS is on the drive, you need an image of a working disk also (or special utilities for creating one). Talk to blue68f100 for which revision you have, with or without flashram.

Phoenix, re3dyb0y answered it correctly, but did not give the details on what Hardware (v1 or v2), BIOS, OS version (1-4).

Once he installs a HD he will find out.

Read the FAQ's

Based on the records I have from before the drive failed, this is what I think I have (had):
SnapServer 1000
Serial Number 102044
Hardware 3.1.1
BIOS 2.1.363
Software 2.1.340

My guess is the OS was on the drive. So you will need a image file. Or your original SnapOS CD may have a utility. Some did some didn't.

Hey fellas,

I found the Assist program buried in the 4.0v upgrade, available from the Adaptec website and used it to upgrade to the 3.4v OS.

How big a drive do yo u think I can install in the server?

Thanks,
Steve

Model 1000 series

Software 3.4.805 (US)

Hardware 3.1.1

You biggest restriction would be the power supply. If it's 12vdc 2.5+ amp you can install most anything. But I would recommend keeping it under 500gig. There are like 3 different models of the the 1x000 maybe 4. If you watch your start up, if the HD has a delay start, I would stop around 250gig. If the HD spins up instantly you have the later model and can use the larger drives. In any case I would recommend running it 24/7. Starting stopping is the hardest thing to do one these units. Connect it to a UPS and let it go.

I forgot to ask...

Can I use Ghost or any decent hard drive mirror utility to clone the drive?

Steve

It must be done with a RAW copy. If the program inturpits file data if will not work. This is the main reason most use Digital Dolly.

Changing disk size will require a format. So you will need to backup your data.

Ok I copied to OS to the new drive, but the disk utility shows the old drive size??

What steps do I need to take now?

You need to do a full reformat or 'reinit' of the drive

http://ipaddress/config/debug

config devices reinit 1000

I believe

blue68f100
06-20-2007, 02:18 PM
close

co de format 10000 /reinit

This will re-fromat the HD and ALL Data will be lost.

That's the trick thanks so much...

I now have a 500 gb Snap1000...

I loaded the image on to a flash card and followed your instructions.

Thanks,

Steve

Save the image for future use. You never know when a HD will fail.

Remember to let it run 24/7, it's easier on the equipment.

re3dyb0y

For running 24/7 - If its not being used at all, turn it off, but as david said, if your using it, its better to leave it on 24/7, the hard drive will last longer

David: Not bad from memory since i havent done it in years!

Sam the 1000 use a special control system for controlling the HD. It does not start up soon as the start signal is received. It seam to wait up to 5 sec before it starts spinning up the HD. The v2 and 1100 start as soon as the start is signal is received. Less wear and tear the better.

All snaps are design for 24/7 so it does not hurt them. You must operate the unit with the cover on. Failure to do so will over heat the units. There is a sensor somewhere on the MB that controls the fan. I discoverd with out a cover or cover the gap between the HD and rear of case the fan will not run and the temp gets real hot.
