Ugly Ductling

Everyone's building new computers right now...

I tried aircooling this time, with ducting. Emphasis is still on near-silent builds, and the initial results are fantastic. The final build will offer an excellent balance of price versus performance versus noise.

I am buying parts right now for a very similar project. I am thinking AMD Brisbane 45watt or 65watt dual core. Not worried about processing power as my current single core 3000+ @ 2400mhz handles everything I do without slow down. So theoretically dual 2ghz+ cores should be more than enough. I will spend a little less on the CPU right now and a little more on the motherboard so I can drop in a faster CPU later in time when faster 45watt or less version come out if I need more power.

There really is not alot of reason to go liquid anymore. Even for enthusiasts. New quieter fans ontop of higher performance heatpipes are hard to beat. Not only price/performance but even head to head on performance.

Another project I am considering is an Intel Atom CPU based system. The 1.86ghz model only uses 2.4watts! However not sure if there will be a motherboard for it or if it will just be handheld and notebooks...

It cracks me up that other people think about this stuff. For a long time I've thought about making a insert to a window so I could pull air in from the outside, and then exhaust it back outside. living in Denver means that there are several long months where I could pull in some really chilly air.

Of course I'd have to be careful about how cold the air was how humid it was (condensation = suicide). the construction of such a thing could be really rudimentary and easily done, I just never did.

Jaydee, your build(s) should burn considerably less power than my rig. BTW, I expect you'll notice a subjective performance increase. My previous PC (still running) is a single-core Opteron at 2.4GHz, so it's not slow. But the new C2D just snaps in comparison! Normal UI responsiveness feels instantaneous, which is very addictive.

I did that last winter. VERY nice results.
