Watercooling Knowledge needed

I am going to be using a Poly block with a 55w peltier and I am wondering if I need to put the Cold plate I have in the setup too? The clamp i am getting will allow it to fit but I am not sure if I should put it there.

Yes you most likly need a cold plate, it helps spread the heat around so the pelt can effectivly take away the heat.

What kind of processor are you using, 55W might not help if your processor puts out more heat, the effect is the pelt heating up on both sides and killing your processor http://www.procooling.com/ubb/frown.gif

I am using a p3 700mhz which at this moment is at 950mhz and the previous owner had it at 1050mhz with pelter/watercooling... do you suggest a bigger peltier maybe? I have a 400w PSupply so that shouldn't be a problem.

Yes definatly!

You are going to need a MINIMUM of a 72W pelt, probably more (I can't remember what PIII 1ghz chips put out in heat, most likely it is about 70-85W of heat) so to play it safe get a big pelt if you can get it. If you use that pelt it will most definatly kill your proc and you will be uber pissed http://www.procooling.com/ubb/smile.gif

Good job w/ the 120w... You'll like that. If it runs at 16v, that means in essence you'll be running it at around 100w. Make sure to insulate well. Have you ordered the poly-block yet? If not, grab the copper waterblock w/ the swirling chamber instead... You are going to want the best possible heat dissipation when using a high wattage pelt.

I ordered the Poly-Block from Overlock-watercool.com but it hasn't arrived yet, I ordered it on the 3rd. Peltier will be here tomorrow

I got the same thing from OC-WC, but mine is a poly block w/ a silver bottom. MMMMM, can't wait. BTW, it is a swirling chamber design.

But Hey dont intel cpus have a heat protection that turns of the machine if the CPU gets to hot.. i read about that somewhere.... :>

I think 120W is a little too much for P3. My P3-750 @ 1035 1.85V using 80W peltier, load temp is only about 14C. Idle is as low as -10C. P3 1000 GHz only produces 30-40W of heat. You will need very very serious insulation.

A p3 1G puts out about 30W of heat (70+W is athlons not p3s), so a 120W peltier is on the overkill side, on the other hand 55W is too little, an 80W would probably be best. As for over-temp shutdown stuff I believe that's in the p4 not the p3.

For those too lazy to click, heres what happened.

P3- proc shuts down and system locks up, needs reboot. Nothing burnt.

P4- proc throttles back as evidenced in Q3 slowdown, system keeps going, nothing burnt.

AMD Athlon T-Bird and AthlonMP: Core meltdown almost immediately (within 1sec of pulling the heatsink). Tbird measured at 350°. You should note that the light-colored stuff you see around the CPU core on the AMDs is not a melted core, but burnt thermal goo.
