I've seen it mentioned in other forums (AMDZone) that Win98 will work fine with up to 512Mb memory. Anything over that and performance can drop off, due to the way Win98 manages memory.

I've got 512...its great! no virtual memory at all! However, I havent gotten windows to use up more than 400 megs...after that it gets slightly unstable

I've got 512 meg too, with a 1Mb swap file. I have some old software, that dates back to the days when 4Mb was awesome, that seems to check for a swapfile, and won't run without it.

Windows cant benifit with anything over 256Mb.

Windows Memory management is SO bad that if you have an app eat that much memory ( over 256mb) the OS will slow down anyways.

W2K was a very noticeable improvement going from 256 to 512 and a slight imrpovement in some apps going from 512 to 1Gb

98 only caches 64megs, but its no big deal when you have more than 128. I have a friend and his win98 wouldn't boot with more than 512, worked fine with 512 though.

Ah hell, if you're willing to drop for more than 256MB of RAM you might as well get Win2K and a faster proc. Win2K handles mem helluva lot better than WinME/98/95
