Well, this could tenuously belong in the phase change forum because of the heat pipe element to it, but I thought I'd throw it out in here first since the final application is aircooling.

Does anyone know of a manufacturer (OEM/ODM type as opposed to Swiftech or Coolermaster) who produce planar heat pipes?

I've googled this to death and have found the likes of TS Heatronics, Novel Concepts, Furakawa, Fujikura and Thermotek but need other options.

Interesting...

Is there a real need for fins so close to the base?

Not necessarily. I'm just aiming to jam as much effective surface area on there as possible.

Are you thinking fins running that low is a bad idea?

I guess it can't hurt, but I thought that the purpose of a heatpipe was to carry the heat away, so I assumed that the fins near the heat source would be irrelevant.

Aahhh, yea, I see what you mean.
Those fins would be less effective, being more or less sat on top of the heat source, but not quite irrelevent.
