Well I have recently priced our next game server. This server is going to run CS and DOD at the same time. The os will be Gentoo.

Both systems cost in the low 700's for the Mainboard proc's and 1gb memory.

System 1: Dual P4 Xeon 2.0 GHZ 256k cache.

System 2: Dual Athlon MP 1.8 GHZ

What do you think?

Thanks,

BrianW

Two questions. 1.8Ghz, assuming 2200+ ? Tbred ?

Either way, AMD . As far as i know, they give the Xeons a run for their money, even the 2.4Ghz Xeons .

I think you are right max. They are at newegg, and carry this Model#: AMSN2200BOX. Thanks for the input. Quick question: do you know if the CPU optimazations in linux work with the MP's as well?

Thanks again,

I see no reason why they shouldn't work. But i'm not a linux geek :) .

Btw, found a resonable review :

The really big problem with the MP's is the stagnant motherboard market. And now with the Opteron's , well , you get the picture.

I believe the MPX chipset will do fine. Do you not think so?

Thanks,

Sure.
But it would be nicer to have 333 fsb support ;).

Yeah but the chips are 266 anyway, and I do not intend on overclocking. This box will be in a datacenter, and I will be unable to monitor it physically.

Thanks again for the help.

A couple of our ISP's (associated with gameservers) give a similar service, but we're limited to the availiable bandwitdh and traffic limitations for the gameservers service.

But hey, it's free. We just have to give the machine.

Same type of deal? :)

NO, I have been looking for such a deal for some time now. One of our clan leaders has secured us 2u space at his job's datacenter.

linux optimizations should work with MPs, just one jumper and you turn an XP into an MP.

And even if you don't overclock, dropping the multiplier and raising the FSB won't hurt stability while improving performance.

It's not as good as you might think.
We used to call it LagLider. :D

Fortunately, not anymore.
