Has anyone had a chance to try this. This would greatly increase the value of these old models as v.4 supports "active directory" and windows server 2003.

any feedback?

any feedback?

I recently purchased 2 Snap Server 4000's from an auction. I knew what i was buying but i sort of got screwed on the software. I need them desperately to run on an Active Directory domain with a Windows 2003 Server but i can't afford to shell out 699.99 for the OS v4. Can anyone help at all please? please? please? I am desperate and broke now.

Any info on dealing with the SnapServers 2200 series would be appreciated. I had one of a mirrored drive set fail. What a great system that won't let you access the remaining "good" drive........
Adaptec is a killer on thier support and repair costs and procedures.... $120 just to take a phone call.....

If anyone has a copy of SnapOS v4, can you please mail a copy to <the_apogee(at)yahoo.com>. I currently have v3 on a SnapServer 4100 and would like to upgrade it.

I just bought it used (4 x 30GB version), has reset the configuration to default, but cannot see it using SnapAssist 2.4. I also tried accessing through the browser using the default name http://SNAPxxxxxx where xxxxxx is the serial no. No luck. Any suggestions ?

You need to spend some time reading through the forums (hacking the snap). Upgrades to snaps must be done in a specific sequence, failure to do so will make turn it into door stops. The 4100 also has hardware restrictions. SnapAppliance/Adaptec has a download section, but very limited. Check on poogles_uk site and threads (#551) for upgrade files. Assist is up to v4 now.

Good Luck

xxx.SUP version is prefered so I can install it with the assist program.
please send either a functioning link/ftp address or the file itself to "bob at stufin.com" .

Hate to burst your bubble. If it's not working correctly, an upgrade won't fixit. The only thing v4 does is allow large hd support if you have the proper version of BIOS and hardware.

YES and NO.

There has been some reports of the 4.0.860 make the 2000 run slow. The problem has been traced down to the early 27k units. Check your BIOS and HW and see if it greater than v2. It apears the units after that with 64meg ram have had no problems.

I do not recommend up grading the 2000 just to be upgrading. The 2000 stores the OS in flashram. Once you do an upgrade you can not backup. So if you have any problems your in trouble. The 2200 uses a std boot bios. This version can be reversed if there is a problem.

I don't think you want v4 for large disk support. The sucess rate has been extremely low. Since the 4100 stores the OS in flashram. Upgrades are not reversable.

OK. How about 3.4.803 or 3.4.805 (which I understand supports large disks)?

3.4.805 is you best bet. Most have tried v4 to find it doesn't work.
The 4100 has a hardware problem related to the promise controllers. In v4 the 48bitLBA is locked out on the 4100.

I'm Sorry, I may not have given enough information.

I have 2 Snap Server 2200s. These both have SnapOS version 3.4.790 with hardware versions 2.0.4 and BIOS versions 3.4.758. These are both functioning correctly using HDDs < 130GB. I am only looking to upgrade the OS in order to enable support for 250GB hard drives. I see that poogles_uk is running a similar 2200 and has successfully used a 250GB HDD in it.

I have downloaded the SnapOS v4.0.860 upgrade from Adaptec and updated the JVM and Sync software on these servers. They will not accept the SnapOS upgrade. As I thought I understood from reading these threads, I first need to upgrade the servers to SnapOS v4.0 and then upgrade to 4.0.860. If this is not necessary to enable support for 250GB HDDs in the 2200s please correct me.

If this is correct, and I need to first upgrade to SnapOS v4.0, could someone please give me the details on how to obtain this or another version of the OS which will allow access to large HDDs. I will happily donate to the cause if I can get these working.

Thank You
David

I have 2 x 300gig in my 2200. Runing OS v4.0.860. I run in Raid 1 configuration.

If you want to upgrade drives. The easiest is set snap up in Raid1. Then fail 1 drive at a time. Install a replacement. After it has mirrored. Fail the other. and do the process again. Its best to fail drive 0, witch is the bottom drive, if you are going up on capacity. But the way raid works it shouldn't matter.

I understand that I should be able to use large drives in my 2200 with a 4.0.xxx OS version. However, my 2200s have 3.4.790 on them and I cannot install the 4.0.860 that I can download from Adaptec. I understand from previous posts that I must first use a full 4.0 OS upgrade of SnapOS and then I can upgrade to 4.0.860. What I am looking for is information on how I can get the full SnapOS v4.0. Otherwise, if you can tell me how I can use the 4.0.860 file from adaptec to upgrade from 3.4.790 I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for the help. I now have 2 Snap Server 2200s running SnapOS version 4.0.860 with 2x250GB HDDs in each one. This is working very well and the performance is good.

I have another question that I can't seem to find any information on in this forum or elsewhere.

Is it possible for a Snap Server to spin down its drives when it is idle? This is potentially a major issue since 7200 rpm drives spinning 24x7 even with good cooling are not going to last long. I find no setting for this in SnapOS except possibly a vague reference to IDE power in the "bios flags" command output.

If I execute "bios flags +sleep" it returns the following:

Bios Boot Flags:

Auto Reboot is Enabled
Forced Broadcast mode is Disabled
Forced Promiscuous mode is Disabled
L1 Cache is Enabled
L2 Cache is Disabled

Enet Flags (0xFEED):

IDE Power off is by Sleep Command

If I execute "bios flags -sleep" it returns the following:

Bios Boot Flags:

Auto Reboot is Enabled
Forced Broadcast mode is Disabled
Forced Promiscuous mode is Disabled
L1 Cache is Enabled
L2 Cache is Disabled

Enet Flags (0xFEEC):

IDE Power off is by IDE-Reset assertion

The unit does not seem to spin down its disks regardless of which of these settings are used. I know Guardian OS has a spindown feature, but I find no similar option in SnapOS. If anyone has any idea how to get a 2200 or any other model running SnapOS to spin down it's drives, I'd appreciate the help.

blue68f100

Sorry there is no such cmd for sleep mode. These units were built for 24/7 operation.
That is why the factory installs interprise quality drives. My 2200 runs cool. I installed a high output fan when I did the upgrade. That is also why I run RAID 1, I expect drives to fail when under this kind of service. Heat is the biggest factor. As long as the drvies are kept cool you will get good service. Seagates carry a 5 yr warranty, most others have 3 yr. I expect to use the warranty some where down the line. If not I got execelent service. In after 5 yrs I will proably replace them and fan before they fail. Put a tag on it some where for when the drives were installed. The 2200 I bought only had 3 yrs of service. Most fans last 3-5 years.

These units perform real good with there deciated promose controllers. I was looking for one when I bought my 2000, but didn't want to spend the big bucks for them. At that time the 2000 on ebay were going for $200-$300, where the 2200 were $700. Looked at the 4X00 models but didn't have the space to put it.

Yeah, as david has said

It has to be the hardware that supports LBA-48 bit, rather than the software in most cases

Hence no look whatsoever with a 4100

Is there any chance someone could send me a link or possibly post the 4.x full upgrade on rapidshare or something. I have an M4100 running 3.4.803 and would like to upgrade it to 4.0.860, but I need the full version of 4.0.830 or 4.0.855 to get there.

Stick with v3 unless you need MS 2003 server AD support, I think that was added. v4 need more ram.

There are 2 version of the 1000. The early version 1 had the OS stored in flashram. Then the later ones (v2) were like the 1100's, using a boot bios, with os on HD. Let us know the vitals when you get it. We will then assist you in getting it up and running. If you can connect with no drives installed, you have a v1. If v2 you will need to copy the boot tracks from the old HD to the new one. You will need assist after rsetting the snap, I will email the resetting instruction to you.

Hi,

got an 1000 running with an old & noisy 30GB HDD that needs an upgrade.
The web-interface does not come up when the drive is disconnected from the controller, so it _seems_ to be a v2, if i understand this correctly.

More Info:
Software: 2.3.417 (Ge)
Hardware platform:3.1.1 Model:1 (32 MBytes)
BIOS: 2.1.364

Any info on how to switch to a new 160GB drive appreciated ;)

blue68f100
03-23-2006, 08:27 AM
Use dd (from Knoppix LiveCD) to copy the fist 25 meg of your 30 gig to the new 160. If you all data on it copy all of the 30 gig. Then issue "co de format 10000 /reinit" from debug. To get full capacity (>137gig) you will need either 3.4.805 or v4. Those are the only version that support LBA48bit Addressing.

Instruction for use DD is posted in the wiki section. It does not specifly cover going from hd to hd. Just need to substitue the source file to a dev/hd? where the 30gig is mounted at.

If you need more specific help with dd let us know.

I'm new on the forum and still researching (about 2 hours into it so far and still reading!) but I thought I'd post this sooner rather than wait till the end of my reading.

I've just acquired a 2000 with a high serial number (56xxx) but no software. There's nothing wrong with it, I just don't know how to access it. I'm on my W2K3 controller and when I first plugged it in, my dhcp server gave it an address. But due to a fault network cable I couldn't ping it or anything. I replaced the cable, have powercycled the box several times, but it doesn't seem to be asking for an address any more and I can't "find" it on the network via ping.

The System light blinks steadily about once a second (perhaps slightly faster than that), and the link light is green and steady. The Net light blinks erratically, as a network light should. The disk light goes on at the start for a bit, and a couple of times after that, and I can hear it spin. So I think the unit's fine (there's no reason it wouldn't be afaik). I just want to start using it!

Can someone send me whatever files you think I'd need to actually use this thing? I'd like to upgrade the disks (the label says it's 80GB) and the opsys etc, but first thing's first - just accessing it.

I tried surfing to the address that the dhcp server gave it, but as I said with the faulty cable that didn't work, and since replacing the cable I'm not seeing it via ping. Is there some clever way to tell it to do an IP address refresh/request?

Files would be appreciated, and of course I'll continue reading this forum for edification, illumination, and instruction!

There are some instructions for resetting the snap in the wiki.

Yeah, thanks, found them, reset it, and got it all working and totally buggered. Which is the fun part! It also turned out that I was getting a strange duplicate IP address - it was configured for dhcp and getting 10.10.10.10, yet it turns out that address was in use somewhere in the house. Haven't tracked it down yet, either. THe symptom was that the 2000 was running like a dog - pages taking forever, timeouts, the server appearing to go offline, etc.

I configured it manually for it's own address and it works fine now. Looks like the unit's working fine, too. I upgraded the memory to 256MB, and will upgrade the disks next. I should probably post this in a different thread, but my unit has the following:

s/w: 3.1.603
h/w 2.0.0
serial 56866
bios 2.0.282

So all I need is an updated bios and etc. to at least 3.4.805 I believe, and I can stick in a couple of larger-capacity drives >136 gigs.

Would appreciate assistance with any of the above

If he does that he will need assist. If he reset the admin PW it will allow him access, if it was set for dhcp, and he has a good cable.

Persons who have bad cables laying around generally have several. They fail to throw out or clip the ends and re-terminate.

No, it was just the one cable. It's gone now. I have a drawer full of new ones and I've used one of those. Works fine.

I don't need Assist because I reset all the config including passwords, IP address etc. I then checked on my dhcp server and saw what IP address it received, and from there it was easy.

I should have mentioned previously that I'm running W2K3 Active Directory, so I'll need to use a v4 rather than 3.4.805+, ideally.

Interesting to see that this forum and thread gets a lot of attention, even for devices that are getting quite old. I was lucky with my device - it appears brand new inside, cuz I think the company never used it. The drives were empty, too. It's kind of a shame throwing out the 2x40GB quantums.

Good idea, although I'd rather "pay it forward" and give it away rather than sell it, assuming someone can send me a version 3.4.805 or above of the o/s so I can actually replace them with large capacity drives! ;)

Yes, saw that - unfortunately no unix boxes in the house, so I'll have to be patient.

I need to update my ver 3 to a 4, so I can work on mirroring them including backup up the security from one and restoring it on the other. I know what I need to do, but need the proper OS for the one. I've asked adaptec and they said they cannot sell just the OS without the bronze maintenance. Talk about a gimmick!!

Most 1000 (v1) have the OS in flashram. If this is what you have it takes ~10min for the OS to be installed before you can access it (admin). Then it may takes another 30-45 min before the drive is fully init.

What is the led pattern. system 1 and disk 2????

1000 are slow so it is possiable that it could take over 24 hrs. All depends on the LED pattern.

Looking for OS. (1000v2) OS Not Found

If you have a working drive you need to copy the boot tracks over to the new one.

Instruction in the FAQ's or use the quick link in my signature.

2. My HD has failed. How do I replace it?
A. The 1000v1 has the OS stored in flash ram, just install the hd. It takes about 10 min before you can connect to the web interface.
B. If you have a 1000v2 or 1100 you must transfer the boot tracks from a working unit or by the use of image files. There are 2 different image files used to recover from a failed drive in the 1x00's.
C. The 1000's normally use a 1000 image file, but if you get a 1 x 2 LED blinking pattern it requires the 2200.img file.
D. The 1000v2 & 1100 requires an image file to be copied to the new drive. (Normally the 2200 image file)
Note: You need to reinstall the OS after doing an image file recovery to replace any missing OS files.

Do I need take new hdd out from snap put on cpu use fdisk then format 16 or 32 then put 2200.img then put hdd back to snap that way it works?

NOPE. Will not work that way.

The snap is built on BSD. You must copy the OS from the original HD to the New one. You can try to coping the OS from the failed drive using Digital Dolly to the new one. You only need 15-25 meg for the OS to boot. Other wise you will require an image file to restore the snap to a working unit.

1000 have been odd on getting them up and running. Some require a 1000 img other will work with a 2200. And some times it doesn't work the first time. I quit trying to keep up with what works on them.

If the 1000 drive is totally dead, you may be able to use the 2200 to init the 1000. But the 2200 must be in a RAID 1 configuration to copy the OS to the new HD. If it doesn't work it will actually require a 1000 image file.

You said you have a 2200? Use the procedure in the wiki section to backup the 2200. Then copy the boot tracks to the 1000 and see if it works.

Save the image file on a cd along with the sup files. You may need it again, if for some reason you have to reload your 2200 or 1000 again.
