Yes, you can throw them in a desktop motherboard, as long as its socket 754.

Mind pointing to me where u found that info out? I'd rather not spend that much money without reading the info for myself. Thank you for the super fast reply tho, i love this forum.

according to a moderator at AMD's own forums, they are compatable, but may be detected incorrectly by the motherboard (I bet you planned on changing the bios settings anyways)

Hummm, what about finding a faster cheaper standard one and undervolting it and dropping the MHZ. Or do 754 boards not allow undervolting?

My guess is that he plans to do the exact opposite - up the voltage and play with the multiplier and FSB to get a faster processor. Mobile A64s are basically unlocked, underclocked, and undervolted A64 desktop processors - I expect that he should be able to get at least 3400+ speeds out of it.

I guess, you can get a 3000+ for less than a mobile 2800 and probably get 3400+ speeds from it aswell.

The A64 Desktop 3000+ is a 2.0ghz chip @ 1.5v & 89w for $211 OEM
The A64 Mobile 2800+ is a 1.8 ghz chip @ 1.2v & 35w for $234 OEM
The A64 Desktop chip is multiplier locked
The A64 Mobile chip is multiplier unlocked
The A64 Desktop chip has a heatspreader
The A64 Mobile chip does not (this should allow better cooling)

Overall, with equivalent cooling, the Mobile chip will almost certainly overclock better.

The 35W mobile only has 512Kb cache, while the 62W version has 1Mb L2 cache.

As I understand it, neither has dual channel memory, but 754 doesn't support that anyway.

Correct - the 62w 2800+ does have 1MB cache, but it also runs at 1.4v

This is about as close to hearsay as I'd like to post on this forum, as I can't find the article that stated this, but I read that the best AMD64 754 chips are clocked at 1.8Ghz @ 1.2v, next best at 1.6 @ 1.2v, then 2.0 @ 1.4v, then 1.8 @ 1.4v.
Then come the desktop processors.

From the benchmarks I've seen, in most cases the extra 512 cache doesnt make that big of a difference, and the extra OCing potential of the 35w version makes it appealing to me - but as with anything, there are tradeoffs.

I thought they said all A64's were unlocked. Oh well. Mobile it is.

Nope. AMD have made it so that if you want an unlocked chip, you either need to get a FX or a Mobile chip. The regular A64s are locked :(

Not entirely true.

The FX, and presumably the athlon are completely unlocked. The athlon 64 is only partially unlocked, allowing lower multipliers to be selected. Good if you've got memory which can handle some hefty clocks.
