Congrats! It doesn't seem like that long ago when you first started does it?

OK, I lied. You've been at this a heck of a long time! :D Looks great though.

starbuck3733t 09-26-2005 06:29 PM

Yeah I have been... The offical first post of the log was August 2nd, 2003. I copied the log here a few months after that. It's been a "long strange trip." :D Thanks for the compliment.

starbuck3733t 11-13-2005 07:08 PM

Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated

I'm not dead, I'm still working on this project 2+ years later but just so happen to be saving up some stuff for the "BIG ONE" that will probably mark the mechanical (not software) completion of the project... What a long, strange, trip it's been.

I'd like to thank Henri Skippari VERY much for hooking me up with one of his Noritake 800A VFD to USB backpacks, which works beautifully with LCD Studio.. You rock, Ray! The design you see is what Henri's converter draws to the screen when it first powers up...

Ya'll remember the VFD? Sure you do. Remember the ugly green color? Yeah, probably...
http://www.personal.psu.edu/staff/m/...iath/46/01.jpg

Even with just holding the dark blue light gel (filter) in place, it looks pretty good. The blue of the screen even matches the LEDs pretty well (look at the bottom of the picture.) The observant reader will notice this modder in the reflection of the gel.
http://www.personal.psu.edu/staff/m/...iath/46/02.jpg

Even better with the filter fully installed... it looks sooooo sweet.
http://www.personal.psu.edu/staff/m/...iath/46/04.jpg

Nice wide viewing angle and consistent color
http://www.personal.psu.edu/staff/m/...iath/46/03.jpg

Now all I need is some quality time with LCD Studio making screens for all the data I've got available form Speedfan and other sources.

I know this is a bit of a tease... but I felt a small update would be a good thing.

I Like That Glad To See Some Updates ;)

Brians256 11-15-2005 04:23 PM

Keep on moddin...
Still looking good.

I must not be good enough at EE. That makes no sense.

starbuck3733t 11-23-2005 12:27 AM

The fact that I used R1 as a 1K resistor to simulate the load didn't help... should be more like 20 or 30 ohms. That and the fact that the VDC at the left of the schematic is me being lazy and simulating a TTL level input. Q1 acts as a switch to fully turn M2 off... 5V straight into Gate won't do it. With Q1 off, there are ~12V the Gate of M1 and it is turned on and therefor passes the V1 source through.

with Q1 turned on, M1 is turned off w\ 0V at it's gate and M2 is turned on with 0V at its gate and passes V2 into the load.

V1 simply represents a given voltage input, not a 7V source. V2 is the same. In reality when this is incorporated into the rest of the chassis control system, V1 will be full 12V and V2 will be the input from the mobo's PWM (speedfan rox!).

(the encrypted bit is the SPICE netlist run through rot13 ;))

Woooow... *Really* impressive modding... I envy your patience more than Your tools. Question: Do You have time to use this piece of art between the modding?

Yes, actually. thats why the no progress posted as of late - I'm in winter hibernation... playing games on the beast!

Any more news or progress on this beast ?

starbuck3733t 11-24-2006 10:16 PM

scopEDog's Ceberus WB1 in G1/4" nestles nicely into its new home. Plus some semi-custom LGA-775 to PGA-478 mounting plates - that was fun. Broke a drill bit and a tap in the process? can you tell where I fowled up? NO! 1337 sauce!
http://www.personal.psu.edu/mss26/ars/goliath/49/1.jpg

Intake from radiator plumbed - system is 1/2" in, 3x10/8mm out to Silentstar HDD, Twinplex GPU, and Twinplex Northbridge.
http://www.personal.psu.edu/mss26/ars/goliath/49/2.jpg

The sun shines for the first time on the Cerberus WB1 inside it's new home. I started the switch at 12:30 AM and didn't finish until 7AM. Oi vey.
http://www.personal.psu.edu/mss26/ars/goliath/49/3.jpg

And this was one of the reasons why, the SF800 flowmeter (and this one WORKS!) is finally in place after almost a year, and one dead SF800 behind it.
http://www.personal.psu.edu/mss26/ars/goliath/49/4.jpg

I also moved the pump to where the old splitter used to sit - the DDC has gone back to a stock top (thanks again for the parts scopEDog!) and makes for a very compact setup. Plus, personally, I think the all-black 8/10mm tubing is very sexy.
http://www.personal.psu.edu/mss26/ars/goliath/49/5.jpg

The other thing I did... I stripped all the sheet metal panels off the case, if you didn't notice. I don't have the $$$ to do have them professionally painted now, but I refuse to do anything less. The blends need to be perfect from mesh to metal, and from the flush-fit window... my skills aren't up to it. I'd happily send another forum-goer the business, so PM me if you're interested.

This is far from over. I will never give up.

Re: Project Goliath - 70+ pounds of H2O goodness!

Panels are stripped - I figured if I was gonna gut the watercooling, it would be a good time to pull all the sheet metal off the case, including the bottom (2nd in from the left). You can see the feet dinged up the paint on the bottom... no big deal, but this paint job just wans't up to snuff. Neither was the flush-fitting of the window - something that's going away. I think you'll enjoy the solution I've come up with for a blind-mount... that's for another update, though.

Panels before
http://www.personal.psu.edu/mss26/ars/goliath/50/1.jpg

Panels after a trip into work to use the grit blasting machine - took about 1.5 hours to do all 4 panels. If you ever need to strip something quickly, these machines rock. I'm so glad I work where I do, all the IT toys you can dream of, great people to work with, and a full machine shop which I'm slowly taking advantage of.
http://www.personal.psu.edu/mss26/ars/goliath/50/2.jpg

Back-side panel - the finish is fairly rough, probably equivalent to 50 grit. Plenty of tooth for some etching primer to bite into, but that's the job of whoever paints these. I'm looking for volunteers, and I will pay.
http://www.personal.psu.edu/mss26/ars/goliath/50/3.jpg

Close up of the stripped panels.
http://www.personal.psu.edu/mss26/ars/goliath/50/4.jpg

And now another little gift, I demoed the installation of the VFD panel before, but I realized I've never shot video of it in action, so here you go... youtube style! LCD Studio ROCKS!

Key for main screen - yes, that's 60 FPS solid while playing Counter Strike: Source at 1920x1200. And yes, sync is on.
http://www.personal.psu.edu/mss26/ars/goliath/50/5.jpg

Key for volume screen - I'm still working on this one to show current speaker configs. The windows API for reading speaker configurations ISN'T EASY. This screen only shows up when the volume changes, and it shows up for 10 seconds or so.
http://www.personal.psu.edu/mss26/ars/goliath/50/6.jpg

Key for the time/weather screen. this shows up every 10 minutes, shows the current time, the project logo, the current weather, and tommorow's highs and lows. Comes up twice in the video because this was shot in 1 minute pieces, as that's all my digicam can handle.
http://www.personal.psu.edu/mss26/ars/goliath/50/7.jpg

And now the youtube video, with music by Nine Inch Nails (well, aphex twin for nine inch nails) "At the Heart of it All". Seemed to fit.
