How to stop hacking my wireless?

I think that i have few neighbors which want tot use my net without my permission. I have been advised of several methods like WEP encryption. But also I was told that it’s easy to hack it too. May be better way is to use the VPN tunnels? Like http://strongvpn.com/ ?

VPN is for remote access to your network. Like you are at work and want to get into your network at home.

The link you posted above is for covering your tracks on the internet. Has nothing to do with securing your wireless connection.

Your neighbors are probobly not good hackers. Most likely, they bought a new laptop with a built in wireless card and see your free internet. I would set up WEP, a MAC filter or simply shut off DHCP and set a different default gateway. This will stop most adverage wireless users from acessing your network. You can also log in to your router and ban them by their MAC address. Fell free to PM me if you want extra help. And welcome to the forum!

Just setup WPA, it is easier than WEP and more secure. Once you have it setup, hide the SSID that will prevent most devices from attempting to connect, if they try they will be presented with a popup requesting the pass key.

WPA-TKIP is subjected to Brute force attack, if a dictionaly word was used and 8 chr or less. Use WPA Personal (AES) if available. Use a random generated 20 chr string using all printable chr. I use the free password generator on www.grc.com I found a site that determined the probability of brute force. 20 chr of all printable chr was over 24 yrs at 100k/sec rate. So you can say these are pretty safe. If you have a router that supports WPA2 use it instead. It use the key you provide and generated a ket it self and combines the two. The on a set number of min/sec it changes it's 1/2 so the key is always change eliminating the posibility of hacking the key.
