Need Help Choosing Chipset Fan TODAY

I have a 8RDA+, and it is suspected that part of the problem with it is that the chipset is too hot (the heatsink that is on it will instantly burn your skin if touched ... I have a nasty blister to prove it). The heatsink on it now is all aluminum and about 1.5" x 1.5" x 1.0" high, and circular in design. It is ugly, as well.

I'm thinking about a Vantec Iceberg COPPER chipset cooler combined with some AS3 luvin' to take care of the heat. Do any of you have any recommendations of better solutions? I have no experience with chipset fans and would appreciate your help.

Passive is good. You could always stick a 40mm fan someday.

There is no way this thing is going to be passively cooled unless I stuck a Zalman flower on it and prayed. Really, I'm guessing it is probably over 150F, maybe higher. Understand, it instantly burned and blistered my finger when I touched it. It is really that hot.

The Zalman ZM-NB32J shifts a fair bit of heat. But you could try a flower. Slap a temp probe on it first to see what you're dealing with.

Unfortunately, I don't have a temp probe to slap on it. Needless to say, I've never had a HS on a CPU get anywhere near this hot.

I'll look into that cooler ... brb.

If that had a fan mount I'd look at it. I really think this thing needs a fan blowing on it. Does anybody know of a better one (than the Vantec) with a fan?

The ThermalTake Crystal Orb seems to be in order. You can find it for less than $10.

Crystal orb or my personal favorate, the Blue Orb. That thing works wonders, available almost everywhere, and CHEAP! :)

Have one on my AMD 761 and it is not even warm to the touch.

J, that makes me feel good about ordering the Vantec then, since it outperforms both the Crystal and Blue Orbs.

Thanks for your help, guys.

what about an old cpu fan, like a retail intel heatsink from P3 500 days?

airspirit 12-12-2002 05:53 PM

They are aluminum and less efficient, plus cost the same as the Vantec.
