Anyone used this rad before and what are their thoughts.

this rad preforms great for me u can see my temps in my sig and thats with a vcore of 2 volts

similar in size, but thats not the same rad as the one Dtek uses.
nevertheless, heater cores do well (whether its one you get from DDen, Dtek, or the auto-parts store lol). you'ld be happy with its performance, but there are some things to consider first.

do you have enough room for it? they are typically 7 1/2" tall, 6 1/8" wide, and 2" deep.

you'll have to make a shroud of some sort and duct the fan to the heater core for best results. you can do this with a cardboard cereal box and duct tape if you want (ghetto, but it works lol). dtek sells one also, but its kind of pricey.

next is mounting the rad to your case. this isnt that big a deal; just go to the hardware store and get some proper sized bolts (i use 6x32 thread bolts that are 2 1/2" long) and screw them thru the cores fins.

The above pic is a heater core for an '85 Chevy Chevette, and is available for $22. It measures 6 x 6 1/8 x 2 inches and has 3/4 ID, 5/8 OD fittings.

(It even comes with a 90 day warranty, LOL!)

if you get one from the auto-parts store, try soldering a shroud to it. make it cover the sides of the core too (like the black ice rads). it'll make it look nicer. i wouldve done something like that myself, but ive got *no* room to play with on the sides lol.

just be sure to paint that ugly thing if you have a window :p

I have the Dtek radiator. Got it last fall to cool the dual Athlon. Works great.

i don't see why it would be more expensive or any better than the other heater cores on dtek's site. other than that it's black and has chrome barbs, i don't see why it's "The Ultimate Radiator."

Thats the point he's saying ultimate because it looks better.

i've got the same radiator as you, phaestus, and have yet to build a shroud... what is yours made of and how did you make it?

well a TRUE pro/rad would have a 172mm Rotron on it :)

Well I just replaced my BIX with the pro rad and my idle temps went from 36c to 29-30c and max is now 33c. Crazy

that was a Black Ice Prime in that roundup, not the Black Ice Xtreme.
3C difference eh? maybe that becuase the HC is a lot bigger? :shrug:

The results are still consistant with the review... You can't beat a heatercore.

Black Ice Extreme is a heatercore design unlike the original black ice. It relies on more tightly pcked fins to offset its smaller size, so with fans in the noise range I like (I am old and cantanekrous about this sort of thing) then a heatercore will do much better (fins typically spread apart more). The Extreme also needs a proper fan duct on it, same as a heatercore. Give a fan a 1" duct and you should see some improvement in temps with the extreme.

all the BI rads are a 'heater core' design, its just the BIX got bigger and has fewer passes / more parrallel channels (according to HWlabs anyway).

actually, its more of a radiator design if youve ever looked at your cars radiator befor...heater cores (at least the ones Dtek and DDen sell) have a slightly different fin and channel layout. but anyhow....

According to the procooling roundup:

"The flow goes from one of the fittings down the first 3 tubes, then weaves up and down every 3rd set of tubes."

that would be correct. oh, thats what you meant by being a 'heater core' design, in that the BIX was only 2 passes? its all gravy to me...the priciple was what i was talking about (thin tubes w/ fins), not the actual number of passes.

There's been so many versions of the Black Ice, I can't even keep up with them!

As far as I know:

And somewhere in there appeared a Black Ice, High performance (twice the size)

and now there's a new Black Ice Micro.

I don't know. '85 Chevy Chevette seems simpler to me...

the BI prime was the original. then there was the BI 2 (essentially a regular BI, except twice as long). then the BIX came out, then the BI pro (revised BI prime), and now an 80mm one called the BI micro. its all there on HWlabs' website if you click on "products" up @ the top...
