Geforce's and Pelts

I have a 36W pelter lying around my house and I an curious if it is powerful enough to get a few more Mhz out of my GF3. Currently the GF3 is running @ 250core / 520mem using a Gloden Orb for cooling.

My guess is that at my currect settings, the 36W pelt will not be enough to do anything but maybe cause the core to overheat the way it is.

Am I wrong? If yes, then what would be a good pelt wattage to shot for to try and get say 270 mhz on the core?

NOTE: Prefer not to do a Vmod but could if necessary.

eX&TriC 05-28-2002 05:31 PM

just as an indication because my GF3 had a Vmod
so it was a lot hotter (360/575) I used a 62wat pelt

at 12V: 8-9°C
at 7V: 19-20°C core temp

jtroutma 05-28-2002 07:51 PM

360MHZ Core???!?!?!?

Are you sure that is not a misprint? :)

eX&TriC 05-28-2002 09:21 PM

My bad...

It has to be 260 of course and now I see that I made
the opposite mistake in my sig. My GF4 is not running
at 255 but it has to be 355.
I'm really getting old -<24>- or it's maybe the stress from
my upcomming FINAL exams

has anyone ever bothered to pelt chill the northbridge?

would there be / could there be any advantage to that?

eX&TriC 05-28-2002 10:30 PM

i have seen a review of a (60W ?) pelt being used on a via northbridge (me thinks KT266). The guy got 5 (160> 165) more mhz but then his ram was holding him back ...
But why do it; todays chipsets can go up to 200 (KT333) even the 850 can get there

I tried cooling my NorthBridge with the 36W pelt. With the extra waterblock in my system and the pelt to worry about, I was able to go from 142 to 150 FSB. HOWEVER, my board would fail to operate after a month of use. IF I removed ALL the components from the case THEN it would work for about 2 more weeks then DEAD!

I fried (2) ABIT KT7A motherboards by trying to pelt chill the northbridge so in MY case it was absolutely NOT worth it! Bought myself an ABIT KG7, ripped out the pelt and extra block and have never looked back! Now I am hitting 150FSB but my ram is crap! Going to replace it this summer with PC2700 or PC3000 CAS2 pieces and try for 160FSB.

BUT back to my original question, is a 36W pelt too low for an OC Geforce3 Core?

eX&TriC 05-28-2002 11:15 PM

it will be a close call... but i think it won't do
to my knowledge the original gf3 put out around 20-30W

Brad 05-29-2002 02:56 AM

a 36w probably won't be enough, but it'll be fun to try anyway. go for a 70-80w pelt.

I'm thinking my 760mpx will need to be pelted, just to get above 145mhz fsb

Divided 05-29-2002 09:03 AM

i can see why you might consider chillin the Northbridge on a 760mpx....

i'd be very surprised to see you in the 160's, but best of luck.

damnit why wont they make a better AMD dual chipset..

i wish they could make the KT333 dual

jtroutma 05-29-2002 03:29 PM

I would go for an 80W pelt if I was that serious about freezing my GF3. Problem is that I dont want to have to worry about condensation or insulating the card. Like I said in another thread, I had a very BAD experience with trying to keep condensation away from the pelt.

Bummer though, now I need to find something to do with this dinky little 36W pelt I have now :( Eh, I might just throw it between my Orb and GF3 just to see if I can Squeeze out a few more MHZ from the core w/o having to worry about condensation.

Thanks for the help guys.

BTW I just finished making a new pic for my avatar. Does it look cheezy? (hope not)

Brad 05-30-2002 06:05 AM

I've seen 167mhz fsb on the iwill, which of course I am the new proud owner of

http://www.forumnz.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=594

a pep66 fits on it just fine ;)

just throw the 36w pelt onto your ram

jtroutma 05-30-2002 03:56 PM

Heh sorry I am not that crazy :)

Besides I WANT to get rid of this RAM, cheap Nanya POC peices...... Only good thing about them is that I have 786Mb of it. But then again, it does handle 148FSB @ CAS2 @ 2.83V.

I want some Corair PC3000 CAS2 units!

Power of the NB

Does anybody actually know how much power a NB actually consume? I'm getting my dual MSI today and im thinking of cooling the NB with one of my 80W pelts. Gonna have to build a regulator first though so it won't FREEZE the mobo.

Dix Dogfight 05-31-2002 01:29 AM

Found the answer on NB power

Well i found the answer to my question. Look at picture.
The cut and paste is made from the AMD tech-paper:
AMD-762 SYSTEM CONTROLLER DATA SHEET, publication 24416 rev C.
Hope this is ok with you JOE

With my cold plate on my GF3 I hit 305/615 volt modded and w/ an 85w pelt. You can get that cold plate @ www.maximumoc.com ;) :)

Anomaly2181 08-05-2002 02:45 PM

Hey peltiers are used because of there small size, but they are very ineffcient. A pelt will usually cool about 2/3 its rated wattage assuming you are giving it the required voltage and amerage it wants. A 36 watt tec will actaully only cool maximum 24 watts 2/3*24. Same with people thinking a 130 watt tec will cool a athlon.....130 watt*2/3 =86.6. That is the maximum it will do if you are giving the correct amperage and volatage, and have it seated perfectly.....So generally you can multiply 2/3 * tec power rating and assume a bit less.

Anomaly2181 08-05-2002 02:46 PM

I am not however saying that only 2/3 the heat is created, the full power rating of heat can be expected.
