12V compressors any good?

would this make a good commpressor for a water chiller?

There is also a package available... but I believe it is quite expensive.

I like the idea of a 12v system to run off your PC power supply. It says it will use a max of 6.5 amps on 12v.

PS I am a real newbie at this phase change stuff

That should be OK. It's very similar to the commercial phase-change units.

It uses R-134A though, which is fine, but maybe you could find one with another refrigerant? Danfoss doesn't seem to have one.

Thanks for the fast reply bigben2k

What's wrong with the R-134A stuff?

Is it a good idea to have the compressor run off your PS? Or is an AC version better? No difference?

I was also looking at this article. Is this typical of how to build a water chiller?

bigben2k 01-08-2003 07:35 PM

There's nothing wrong with R-134A.

R-12 or R-22 would perform better, but R-134A is probably a lot easier to get, heck even at Wall-Wart!

That is a weak litle compressor, I think vapochills use it.Don't waste your time with it, it wouldn't chill water good at all.
An a/c compressor will do much much better yes, but they are a bit noisy and big.Refrigerator compressors are what you wan't.

R134a is a lousy refrigerant, it has a high boiling point and it doesn't have a great heat capacity.Propane is of course the best refrigerant to use if you can't get something like R22.R12 is a lousy refrigerant also.
Propane is like the overclockers dream. :)

can i here the sound of someone who really really really likes propane...lol.
one thing is for sure .......aenigma....i always have a idea what you will want for your birthday or christmas .cannt go wrong with getting you propane...lol

aenigma 01-10-2003 12:08 AM

Actually no I don't like propane that much, I would much rather have R12.But the fact is, propane is a very cheap and easy refrigerant to get that perform extremely well.It has a low boiling point, and performs very well.
It performs much much better than R134a and R12, but not R22.
