120mm fan duct/guide
 

Has anyone seen an angled duct for 120mm fan/radiator? I want to use something that will direct fresh air from side window to top radiator

But for 120mm radiator - will still be using 80mm fan on the side tho.

Couldn't you use some sort of PVC pipning joint?

are probably readily available in your local hardware store, are easy to cut down with a hacksaw, and are probably a lot cheaper than the pics I sent which are (in my opinion) illustrative only.

Also if you're only using an 80mm fan, you could use that duct you linked to and build a shroud type thing on the radiator end. :shrug: Upto you.

I probably won't have the 80mm fan on the side window directly attached to the duct. Just the top radiator. The 80mm fan will just blow fresh air into it.

Ok I'm a bit confused, I've drawn up a pic of the possbilities, there are 2 fan positions I can concieve and 3 or 4 fan directions or whatever (the pic has 3 but there are really only two but whatever) Just pick the colors on the picture which describe it best, my tablet is downstairs so the pic is ugly but whatever. Green fan (2) is on the top of the rad (inside outside case irrelevant). Red fan (1) is beneath the rad. Blue air flow (3) is just if you don't have the "default" upward flow depicted in the red/green.

Maybe I'm totally off, just hoping the pic will help you calirfy what it is you're doing.

That is basically what I want. 80mm fan on the side window - near the top - and the top has a 120mm fan with 120mm radiator. 80mm fan blows fresh air to the radiator - the top fan exhausts - pulls air thru the radiator.

I think I get it now :P

I'm not totally sure why you would need a duct larger than 80mm though, the 120mm will be restricted by the radiator (different kidna will cause different amounts of restriction). I doubt it would be further restricted by a duct that's only 80mm, obvioulsy you would still need an adaptor, but you might not - I'll explain in a pic. :D


If you have the 80mm fan, you dont need to connect the duct to the rad - because the 80mm will push the air up towards the rad and the 120 will just suck it in if that cool air is there.

If you do connect the duct, you really dont need the fan, the 120 will suck the air all the way from the side of your case. Also depending on the fan speed and air restriction an 80mm duct might be adequit. If it were me, I would duct it but leave only the pulling 120mm fan. I also think that the 80mm pushing, without connection could work well, it would pump cool air up there, the 120 would suck most of it in (note: if it sucked more than all of it in, then you deinately do NOT need that 80mm at all not that you'd be able to prove any of this :P) if it didn't suck it all in, you're dumping cool air into your case, which never hurts.

Actually I wanted to find a 120mm duct like the 80mm one shape. - so it wouldnt restrict flow on the radiator

But I could attach the 80mm duct to the 80mm fan to direct tis air closer to the radiator

well, i'm not sure of the exact location, but there was a discussion here recently on building a custom fan duct using fiberglass resin & nylons (i'm not joking), i think it was posted by bladerunner (but my memory is a bit rusty there). that sort of thing might work quite nicely since you're thinking of pulling air in from the side panel & a 90 degree bend would be cool. so that might be something to run a search for, if you feel like building instead of buying a duct. good luck :-)

But my whole point is that most likely 80mm will be enough without restricting flow. If you're using an 80mm fan, then an 80mm duct is certainly good enough. If the duct is restricting the air flow then so is the fan(note that 80mm fans do not push an area of air pi*80^2), and the fan is hindering performance. If you're not going to use the fan then there might be justification to use a larger duct, but - maybe not - your radiator can be quite restrictive (depending on many factors).


I also had another though of material you could use. You know when you had to vent your clothes drier? That metal tubing stuff comes with lots of fittings, again check your local hardware, im sure you can find something about the right size, and it will look way pro.

Well I don't see how the 80mm fan would restrict air flow if its not directly connect to the duct - only the radiator will have the duct - I'm only blowing fresh air with the 80mm fan near the radiator bottom.

I was also thnking of using that clear 80mm duct on the 80mm fan to direct the fresh air near the radiator so there is fresh air in that area for it.

Ye, I guess i didn't see what you were planning to accomplish, if it isn't connected it won't restrict it. Depending on how close it is the fan may "miss" more than it hits - If you setup an axial fan I'm sure you can judge how best to space the two - although inside a case, you're prolly close enough :P

It's hard to suggest something without knowing your case setup, but it seems like you have a couple good ideas, as you mentioned either ducting air flow towards the rad, or ducting rad intake towards a fan.
