more brass and copper
 

Hi,
I mixed some brass and copper together last month and came up with this CPU-waterblock

This past weekend I started to put together my Nb-waterblock.
I laid out a maze on some ¼” copper plate and traced the outline of my stock nb-cooler. The maze channels were drilled 1/8” deep and .20 wide.
This is what the copper and brass looked like after a little work

I then soldered them together and ended up with a really bad looking monstrosity.

After a little more work with the file, sandpaper and some polishing my nb-waterblock was starting to shape up

But as you can see there is still a lot of work needed before it is ready for installation




Next weekend I hope to finish it and start putting my mosfet waterblock (yes-brass and copper) together.

mosfet WB ? That means PSU watercooling ! MMHhhhhhhh (drools) ...

psu....not yet, that will be around Xmas time...

Are your 5V mosfets in a row?, the ones in my KX7 are, just need a thin block about 2.5inch long , mind you!, there's a 5v one over near the top right corner that I don't know what it does/powers, there's a 3v one next to it for the memory. I'm not sure if they all need active cooling, the 5v ones for sure, memory maybe if you go over 3v?...

My plan is to finish the nb block, manufacture the mosfet wblock and install those two on the same water line.
Take a little breather and then make up a couple of watercooled mem coolers to fit 2 512 corsair 3200 cas 2 sticks and then make a hdd cooler....and connect those two to a separate line.
then think about the psu.

cooling mosfets?

can i just point out at this point that mosfets are made with the metal (thermally conductive)part facing onto the board, cooling the plastic (not as thermally conductive) will not do much. most of the meat will still go into the pcb of the motherboard and heat all the other compentents on it

you are correct that the majority goes to the metal backing and therefore the mobo however when you crank the vmod up to around 1.95V or higher there is a tremendous amount of heat given off and if I can suck up 15% of that heat, my system will be quite a bit cooler.
I have played (not serious enough to data log) with mosfets a bit and have found that by gluing a piece of aluminum (1/8 x 3/4 x 1") to the ceramic side and then measuring the temps of both the metal mounting side and this aluminum that both sides are the same temp and that the added area of the aluminum dropped the measured temp by 2degrees.
So.yeh you are correct but if this particular adventure had to do with rational judgements, I wouldn't be hand building brass and copper water blocks and then polishing them.

If you can burn your finger on an OC'd mosfet, I'd say there's a bit of heat being absorbed :D. also the PCB is'nt any better at conducting either is it?, so the heat is going to build up, ergo~ the heatsink should work(however ineficiently)...

ok, i see what you mean, MSI now make a mothrboard that has a heatsink on the mosfets, hopefully if they develop that furver by mounting the heatsink on the metal side then we would have a great motherboard for watercooling.

have you ever considered desoldering the mosfet and changing it for a through hole model so you can use the middle leg instead of the tab and having the mosfet standing up?

so as per that article the mosfets were basically jumped!
The middle leg or the tab is the drain so if you jump 5V to the hs you have jumped 5V to the drain of the mosfet effectively bypassing it.

Is that right?, I though you were just bypassing the ATX connector and mobo traces that cause resistance and drop volts?, I know nothing about electrics though. I read the 5V mobo mod from Hoots article at overclockers.com....

Beee-autiful! Makes you wonder whether to install it, or just leave on the mantelpiece as decorative art... Better put a window in that case!

parallel loop off of my ambient chiller

I'm not 100% sure about the mosfets but the ones I've worked with over the past several years have the middle leg as the drain. The back has -0- resistance to this leg so whatever the back is connected to the middle leg is connected to. 5V = 5V??
