Fannless PSU solution?
 

I just had a brain fart! :)

Remember those IONIC BREEZE units that they sell at "Sharper Image" and other places. They use charged plates to move air around and collect dust.

WELL has anyone ever thougth about getting a used one of these and cutting it down to fit right in front or behind a PSU to provide airflow for it? IT would take some tinkering to make it work correctly and there are NO moving parts.

Just an idea for those of you who MUST get rid of every fan in there computer.

I have one and it's a rather large. I can say that this thing is not completely silent, although that won't really matter considering the noise of the HDD's that will overwhealm it. The 'breeze' is so weak (when I put my hand in front of it, I can feel it) but I really don't think that this thing can do much good in cooling, it's simply too weak. And this thing I got is a larger unit for rooms up to 50 m^2, smaller ones would be even weaker...
Another thing is that they are bulky. One would have to have the room of at least one more psu box to fit the smaller unit into...

And this things are a helluva dust collectors... I usually disassemble mine once in a month to clean it (if I don't, the hiss of the unit becames louder, and clearly audible in the room)...I for one wouldn't want to have to take my psu out once a month and clean it...

The idea is nice, but I think it wouldn work well...:shrug:

Never said that it would be practical but if someone had the time and the will to work with one, they MIGHT be able to get it to work for them.

AS for the dust, you could try puting a filter in front of it and then only have to clean it every 2-3 months....

Like I said, it was just a thought.
