Yes, it does show up in the "Network" area in the Finder. But as soon as I try to authenticate my credentials against it, it goes into what was described earlier as "Panic Alarm", and I've noticed that when I restart the server it has to rebuild the mirror drive.

Note that this only happens using MacOS X 10.4.*. On 10.3, the same procedure works just fine.

I'd toss an email to apple and ask them about any differences between samba on versions 10.3 and 10.4. They might have an interesting answer for you. Just a thought.
