Yes they are seperate. They are cut and tapped and welded in place with a two part plastic welding compound which is waterproof, withstands temps of -40C to +200C, and +3000psi bond strength. The piece I tested the compound with has been hammered on repeatedly to try to get the joint to seperate and it has held up strong.
