As u said Ben it depends on airflow..
If you double the heatercore space but decrease the airflow by 50% would that not be roughly equivelent? and decreasing airflow decreases noise...
I image there are mathimatica equations that will prove this idea wrong on a larger scale.. eventualy there will be a point of dimminishing returns...
