I think that's the key: if you don't need a lot of Windows specific software. I tried the windows emulator Wine and the results were just not dependable. Some stuff runs, but you can't assume. Games are especially bad.

For writing documents, email and web browsing... Linux is GREAT. I was impressed with Ubuntu with firefox and Open Office. It was easier to get going than XP.
