I don't think Joe ever intended us to believe that having an air trap in the bottom of the system would cause the air in the trap to escape into the rest of the system.
The idea was that by having the res in the bottom, air pockets could form in the rad that were too big to be swept out by the flow. Also, with the T-line air trap, (which is about what you've got there, Cornerjack) the intake and the outlet are too close together. Air will be swept around through the system, and won't have a chance to rise up into the air trap/res. ... yeah.. eventually the line will bleed, but much slower than with the res at the top.
