The idea was that by having the res in the bottom, air pockets could form in the rad that were too big to be swept out by the flow. Also, with the T-line air trap, (which is about what you've got there, Cornerjack) the intake and the outlet are too close together. Air will be swept around through the system, and won't have a chance to rise up into the air trap/res. ... yeah.. eventually the line will bleed, but much slower than with the res at the top.

No.. You could have an air trap at the top of the case, and if you put the radiator in upside down, it would still be likely to trap air in it. And on the other hand, if you have your air trap under the case, but have the radiator oriented properly, you won't have air pockets in the radiator. Of course, you do need your air trap above the pump, if you plan on making your system easy to fill, I think that is the only requirement.
