Heatpipes must be sealed in order to work. Exposing them to air would allow the coolant (usually distilled water) would evaporate. Actually that wouldn't be the problem. The problem with exposing the coolant to outside air is comprimising the low pressure inside the heatpipe. This low pressure allows the water to boil off at a lower temperature and thus communicate the heat to a larger surface area.
