The impeller with all the spiky things is designed to chop big air bubbles into a butt load of tiny air bubbles.

I used to balls deep in the aquarium hobby. How a protien skimmer works is by incorporating alot of air into the water. The tiny air bubbles have a slight negative charge to them and all the disolved organic solids have a slight positive charge to them. Opposites attract, so the disolved organics stick to the bubbles and float to the top, eventually rising to the top of the foam head and spilling over into a collection cup. Who would have thought you could mechanicaly seperate disolved solids from water?

Skimmer efficency is a function of bubble size and contact time with the water.

That impeller will have a very low flow rate and not much head capability at all.
