The snap 2000 is limited by the drives and cpu power. The factory drives are only 5400 rpm. ATA66. It uses a 40 conductor instead of 80. The RAID is by software, and the drives share the same ide controller. So yes there are faster systems, including the second generation (2200), which blows the doors off of the 2000. The 2200 has promise RAID controller/s on a deciated ide buss, ATA100 (80 conductor).

You take a performance hit if you are use RAID 1 (mirror). You can gain performace buy increasing ram in the 2000, or using RAID 0 (stripping).

Unless you are using a raid 5 with 8 drives and highend controller card you are not likely to exceed the 100mb/s bandwidth.

Since these units are operating on a unix OS, which can run on very little ram (16 meg). I can recall when dos was released, it required a 16-24 meg, 20+ years ago. These are very effiecent systems. Considering if you tried it with a MS OS you would require mega ram, gigahtz cpu. If you are running JM it requires 24meg free to run. So instead of the std 32 meg you need a least 64 meg. The SnapOS is so user friendly to use, which is a plus for novice. And is pretty much bug free.

I have toyed with the idea of building my own NAS system using the FreeBSD OS and SAMBA. Just haven't had the time.
