I have to agree on the risk part, but c'mon, you didn't loose a car racing it, but making crazy underwater things.
The only r/c car i had, was a complete kit with radio and batteries that costed like a few spare parts of yours.
It was really fun to assemble, but lasted less time than enough to learn to drive it decently.
