Default (follow up) Would you be willing to cut into your CPU socket?

Following this thread, I have to ask:

Would you be willing to cut your CPU socket, to install a thermal probe, so that you can get a relative, but more accurate temperature reading of your CPU?

This is what I'm talking about:

Dont do it like that. Do it like this:

Use a serrated knife (aka ginsu) and just saw the socket with that. Don't apply a lot of pressure. Takes 5 minutes

Yes. Hard to see, but here is the wire going under the block. Pretty easy mod done with a knife after removing the top part of the cpu socket.

Larger picture here.

hehe...just like pHaestus showed above

I dunno, I will dremel any socket I need to, it was fast, and easy, and caused no damage to the machine. I have done it on 4 motherboards now.

So you just cut up a piece of the part that's removed? No slicing?

You gotta understand that after you solder on mobos a few times that you develop a total lack of fear. I have motherboards that have vcore, vdimm, vio mods soldered onto them and then wires running to DIMM slots and the ATX power 5V line to tap into the SMBus for a diode reader. The thing looks like something from frankenstein's lab

I would not be willing to chop up a socket, especially if the mobo is under warranty.

I suppose that if someone has a dead mobo, they could be convinced to part with the top of their sockets...

I've dremeled into my CPU casings before (had to tear apart my old Slot-A Athlon to OC it, but I needed to mount it with the casing back on for the retention things cause of my 20lb HSF), so taking apart a socket and cutting a bit of plastic doesn't scare me at all. Judging by pHeastus's pictures, if you know anyone with a dead board you could even borrow the top part of their socket if you need to warrantee your board.

It's also amusing that those images are hosted at voidyourwarranty.net

Would be easiest with Abit mobos because everyone has a few dead ones lying around

You can order the socket by itself and just cut the top of the socket you get and trade it with the one on your motherboard.

You can probably pick one up from Digi-Key

or from Mendelson's Electronics Co., Inc.

or from Mouser Electronics, Inc.

or... from Newark Electronics

I can't believe there are four pansies out there that wouldn't take tools to a motherboard. You people probably don't even give CPUs 2V+

Bah

I think this is a good question to throw out.

I'll state I've not cut on any MB sockets to date.

But after reading this thread I'll say I'd give this mod a go.

Many (at least myself) may not have even given this mod any thought, or hadn't seen the info before that has been linked to.

So this question is a good one for challanging those who havn't done this to give something new some thought.

Could some of those who have done this state the probes they used. And which probes gave them the best result. Please include the resolution of the probes used if possible. Thanks

OK, I cut the socket of my old Abit KG7 and my Asus A7N8X to compare my waterblocks.
The reading "under core" it is the but effective at level of personal tests.

My method has been different, in my drill press I put bit of 4 mm and I slipped the motherboard (with the protected back part) working the groove so that it passed the cable.

The bit even has copper remains.

Before that I proved with a thermal probe of the Volcano 9 but the system failure when starting up in two different occasions.

Yeah this is actually good stuff! I never knew you could pop the socket apart like that. I got a stack of dead mobo's at home I will practice with and then do it on my ECS board (only working board I got left).

An easier way than cutting your socket is to use enameled wire for your thermistor leads. I used windings from a small motor.... the enamel won't cause shorting ,yet the wire is tiny enough to go between the socket and the CPU without interference.

Just make sure you clean the enamel off before soldering.
