Default A couple little things

Let me start by describing the situation that has led to my current round of problems. When my last pump died I decided it was finally time to upgrade my entire cooling system as I had been planning to do for about 6 months. A Maze-4, DangerDen Z-Chip chipset cooler, Swiftech MCW50 GPU cooler, Hydor L30, DTek rad, some ClearFlex 1/2" ID tubing, and various hose-clamps and fittings were ordered (all parts are 1/2" barbs). While I waited for that to arrive I did manage to get the old ViaAqua pumping again, though it took cracking the pump in a few places, lots of silicone and epoxy, and many hours of work, and it rattles like nothing else.

2 or 3 weeks ago the parts arrived and construction began (I had put off modding the case for that 6 months as well as I new I'd have a new cooling system for it sometime). That took a week, and entailed many of its own problems, but finally finished. The system has been running for about 2 weeks now, and the bugs are starting to show up.

1. Something is living in it. The previous system was distilled water + water-wetter in the recommended mixture. Nothing at all grew in it for the year+ that it ran, but it stank and stained all my tygon a kind of pink/orangeish color. I couldn't decide at the time what additives to use and didn't want to use anything that might permanently stain my tubing (my remaining water-wetter), so I used straight distilled water. After about 1 week time my tubing started to get slightly cloudy looking. After about two weeks (as of a few days ago) it was cloudy enough that looking through both sides of the tubing (trying to look at hardware through the tubing) it was opaque. Also, the pump began to get kinda noisy.

2. The pump is developing a rattle. Like I mentioned in point 1 - the pump is getting noisy. I wouldn't consider this a second point, except that last night I emtied the system, flushed it with tap-water, flushed it with tap-water + sodium metabisulfate, blew air through it to get as much tap-water as possible out, and then re-filled it with distilled water + sodium metabisulfate. I also dissasembled the pump between a couple of the flushes (Hydor's do that so nicely) and made sure it was nice and clean inside. The pump was quiet during the filling process, then I left it running (system still unpowered) to get all the tiny air-bubbles out (takes a while with only a T for a air-trap) and when I came back about an hour later it was rattling again.

And so - we come to my questions....

Is AirSpirits *sol mix still the recommended way to make your tubing clear again? I've been away from the forums a lot lately and want to confirm that.

Can I put a tiny amount of glue on my pump impeller somewhere to stop the rattling? This was the solution for most people with rattling ViaAqua's (though mine was VERY quiet till it died), wondering if anyone has done it to a Hydor L30 or not.

Does anyone know of anything bad about putting Sodium Metabisulfate into a computer water-cooling loop? It's a chemical used in home brewing to sterilize equipment and is basically a salt, so except for the chance of it re-crystalizing somewhere in my loop (it really shouldn't as its very diluted and except when in transport to a LAN party the pump is always on). It seems OK so far (coolant and copper in the loop is not discoloring at all, I have plexi-topped blocks) and I plan to use it as my only additive in the final coolant after I clean the tubing if no-one can find any objections on here.

If you had clearflex I would say, don't bet on it. Clearflex absorbs much more inpurities than Tygon. With tygon you the gunk may have not been able to penetrate deeply in the tube walls, and you may have more luck getting it out.

I rinsed using this mix and my tubing never came back. However I let it run too long with the impurities. After I flushed and added WW to my system my temps went down 3C.

As far as the chemical reaction to the tubing.. try using a sacrificial section and drop it in the solution. If it comes out clear on 10-15 minutes you will have your answer.

Ya - while I had the system drained I swapped the fill-tube for a piece from my old system, so now I have a piece of ClearFlex that I can test cleaning solutions on. After a bit more time to see if there are any more replies I'll be testing some cleaning solutions on it and then based on those results flushing the system again.

Also, the Sodium Metabisulfate has now been running in the system for about 24 hours - can't really report much on it yet. So far I can still see no negative effects on the tubing or inside of the plexi-top blocks (no idea if its effecting the rad, but if copper is ok brass should be). It may be cleaning the white stuff off the tubing, I'm not sure. I am pretty sure it killed everything and anything inside there by now, so its possible that without new growth to sustain it the existing white stuff is slowly dissolving.
