Default Snap Server 4500 - No OS installed.

Hello ProCooling Forum Members,

I've been charged with installing GuardianOS onto a 4500 series snap server, I have "GuardianOSImage.gsu" on my Windows XP system but I do not know how to install it on the server. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

You have to connect to the admin page of the 4500, and have it boot into maintance mode. from there you can install the update.

Refer to the admin manual, can be download if you can't find yours.

I've located the Snap Server Administrator Guide from the Adaptec website. According to this I should connect to it via HTTP at http://SNAPxxxxxx (xxxxxx = server number). However, When I boot my SnapServer I recieve the error "system hang" because there is no media to boot from, will this HTTP server run anyway? Also when the Broadcom UNDI-PXE-2.1 ROm is loading I recieve the error PXE-E54 - No boot filename recieved. - I'm assuming it's trying to boot off of the network here. Any advice is greatly appreciated. I also was considering writing the GuardianOSImage.gsu to the drive using Knoppix and DD as shown in the wiki but I'm guessing that is more for SNAPos.

Thanks.

In reguards to my attempt to write the image file using Knoppix.

- I've located the hard drive as hda5 - but when I try to access the drive the system reports: "Could not mount device. mount: I could no determine the filesystem type, and none was specified." - In Windows it said the drive was unformatted. - Should I format this drive in either Windows or Knoppix and if so what procedure should I use?

Also, I attempted to follow the "Write IMG To HD with DD" but the "dmesglgrep hd" command did not work. System reported: "bash: dmesglgrep: command not found"

I'm know I must seem like a pain but pleeease help!

I've read through the documentation and I couldn't find anything applicable to my situation. Perhaps I missed something? I'll look again. About the command however - I got that directly from http://wiki.procooling.com/index.php..._To_HD_with_DD.

you have the harddrive you want the Guardian OS on connected to the computer?

If you're following it step by step and it's not working Try Digital Dolly.... I like Knoppix and all (who doesn't like anything Linux related?) but I hate booting from CD, so I have it installed on another drive on my home PC

It is the OS but it requires a working unit to install.

Currently there is not way to install the gsu. Your only option is find another Guardian OS Unit and have them transfter the os to your drive. In most cases users do not want to tear their system down to do this. It requires change the drive setup to JBOD, removing all drives but drive 1. You install yours in drive 2. After about 10 mim you will have a bootable drive.

Or Purchase a HD from Adaptec with the OS. This is what the last user did that came through here.

You will need to purchase the OS from them, $$$. And for a price they will install the os on a HD so you can boot the 4500, more $$$$.

But it requires a working Guardain OS unit to transfer the OS. The OS (GSU) is not an image file, it is the os. So if you can not get access to the recovery console, no way to install gsu. You need a working unit, to transfer the OS to new a new drive. But I do not know any one willing to brake a working raid5 to transfer the os.

I know it is a longshot, but do you still have an image? Lost 3 of 4 HDD and am needing to start from scratch. Any help is appreciated.

The GSU file distributed by Overland is not an image file that can be used to get a bare unit up and running. And any image file of the HD that contains the Guardian OS is copyrighted. So it can not be distributed.

If you have 1 working HD you can boot your unit. Just move the good HD to slot 1 and boot the unit. It will go into the recovery console, from there you have several options. The best option would to do a clean install.

Blue,

Thanks for the push in the right direction. I have located and install 3 WD2500BB drives. I was able to recover the OS from the one good drive as you suggested. I now have a functioning RAID 5 array on GuardianOS 2.6.50. What are my choices for obtaining a more recent gsu. I am not crazy about donating a large sun of $$$ to Overland for sw support. Does anyone have any suggestions.

Thanks

What is the best way to install a new Guardian OS on a Snap 4500 that I was given? Yes a free system. IC talk about the dealer is the only one that can reinstall an OS on a blank system, is that true and what kind of $$$ is involved?

You cannot install the Guardian OS directly to a blank 4500, the GOS is not designed to be installed that way. The installer is part of the installed GOS. In other words, you have to have at least a partially functioning GOS already installed to install/upgrade the new GOS.

You need a drive image, send it to the OEM, or find one of the few technicians out there who can do it (correctly) for you (like me).

Cost? Can vary a lot, from "not cheap" to very expensive. Me, it is a case by case kind of thing. Make me an offer via email, and don't insult me. phoenix32x@hotmail.com

4500 with NO OS not good. Requires a working unit or img file to install. Like Phonenix32 said, he can help you.

Thanks Phoenix32,

But as I have never dealt with these machines before nor do I know the cost of the software, it is a little hard for me to come up with a price that is, as you say, not insulting. Send me a price in a private message or on this post and I will decide then if I will invest in this system or sell it.

ANYONE, feel free to jump in and correct (if needed) or add to any information I provide here.

Well, here is some, maybe less than helpful, information. But, it is what I can provide.

Last I checked, and it has been a while, a SOFTWARE ONLY contract was like $850 for a Snap 4500. How much they would charge you to take your unit and reinstall after that is your best guess.

A 1TB Snap 4500 with a CURRENT GOS is worth about $900+ on eBay, and with GOS 4.2.x or above, at least $700.

A 1TB Snap 4500 without an OS (like yours) is worth about $150 maximum on eBay. I just saw one with the OS wiped sell last week for a little less than that on eBay and it was in pretty good condition.

Some people in the past who had a couple blank servers, swapped me a server for the install. Etc, etc, etc...

As this is the only server that I have, a swap is out of the question. I guess that leaves one option as I do not want to invest in a server that I have no knowledge about or how to run. Best offer gets it….

Snap Server 4500 with no OS
512 Meg RAM
1TB storage
SYM53C896 SCSI Adapter
No Scratches or dents, case in excellent condition.
