Have you guys seen these?
http://www.ioport.com/peltiers.html

I don't know much in the electronics department. Would these be sufficient?

156w 48mm pelts aren't too popular, cause a 172w 40mm concentrates the 'cold' much more. For those in the extreme crowd, 172w 40mm or 220w 48mm pelts are the only options

Got 1 of 2 transformers. I'm getting 17.5V no load.

no fires or explosions either!

Damnit that thing is huge
You should get a digital multimeter too :P
17.5V no load, you should be able to pull 15V loaded +/- 1V

yup, its the 13.5V model. At first I wired up the primary and secondary backward and MELTED my first outlet plug

after reversing wires, everything is sweet.

the green thing is a 12V LED, at 17 volts it starts to cook the green film off but I needed something to drain the capacitors after I shut the thing off.

gonna order the second transformer soon, it will mount up right beside the first one.

BTW this stuff is fun.

You should use a real led not those pansy 12V things
And don't you use fuses? I have never melted an outlet plug ever, you need a fuse to stop that sort of thing

Just curious, what happens if your sitting next to it and one of those caps blow. I'm no expert but I've seen cap blow and those look like they could blind someone.

Duck and cover
Basically you get showered with flying bits of burning hot metal and electrolyte, it's not fun
Luckily caps rarely explode unless you connect them backwards or put far too much voltage through them.

Bwah hah hah.

I might consider a metal box to put over the caps.

I'm looking into some fuses too

I'm going to put the ps_ok line on 2 relays and 2 temp switches, if anything fails, the computer shuts down.

I'm thinking of also using a momentary switch to power a relay to the pelt power supply, after its on, the pelt PS will power the relay and keep it on, if a cap blows, etc.., it shuts itself down.

now where did I put all those relays?? I'm sure my car has some that it doesn't really need

where are you going to put the temp switches, under the core, or on the side of the coldplate?

hmm, I had considered just on the waterblock, I hadn't though about a pelt failure, I was thinking pump failure. the relays would protect against pelt PS failure.

would what the relation of temp be between block and cold plate if a pelt failed. though it will be protected somewhat since each block will be running 2 pelts.

Must think some more.

the dual pelts should provide enough protection if one should fail, I would notice the problem by the fact that the CPU is no longer running below 0C. Not catastrophic by any means

anyone have any thoughts?

just put it one on either side of the coldplate. So if one pelt fails, you'll still see it

but it won't react unless both pelts fail, cause even 1 172watt pelt will certainly keep it under 57C.

I'll probly put one on each cold plate anyway just cause MECI has a minumum order thing of $20.

I'm trying to figure out how to cut off the Pelt PS after I shutdown the computer.

it can't be a simple relay, cause the ps_ok line will rely on the Pelt PS being on. So I can't just run a relay off the 12V of the computer to keep the Pelt PS on.(IE, pelt PS is on first)

Im gonna open up mspaint and figure this out. I think I've got it in my head, just need to make sure.

ok, got it, the grey blocks are relays, the green circles are temp switches.

this setup should keep the kiddies from turning something on with out the other.

I'll have to hold the pelt PS button in and then hit the computer on button to get everything up.

Worship my mad mspaint skilz

yeah, have the switch in the ps_ok line, and have that turn off relays for the pelt psu.

nice pics man.

http://www.mpja.com/product.asp?product=13135+PS

what about 4 of those. you'd get 20v 26a, which is more than enough.

%^#*%@!!!

oh great, I order the 13.5V 20Amp transformers, and now swiftec carries the 220W pelts!!!! ARGGHHH!!!!

ok, so I have 2 options.

1) sell the linear powersupply and get a switching one, 15V at 44Amps.

2) buy a 3rd transformer and rectifier and tie it in to the system.

resago, buy a 3rd one, it's just a cool thing to do

actually, I'm thinking about speed controllers for RC cars, some of those can be run at 200A or some other huge value, most are designed for 7.2v - 8.4v range, but some for dual motors are designed for 14.4v - 16.8v

ok, I'll buy a third one

I also acquired another case, its an old compaq prolient server tower. It had a ppro 200 on an EISA MB.
it has room to put the power supply inside along with a 9x6 heatercore.

pics coming soon.

I'm Glad DD finally got 226Watt Pelts
