anti-freeze vs. water
could anti-freeze used in cars be a better cooler to use in a water cooled system than water?

In small amounts its better. In large amounts its worse.
AntiFreeze will keep the coolant clean from Bios or any real corrosion. Water alone can become contaminated fast. I would recomend looking into a Water wetter ( Redline makes some), its basicly a glycol base ( same as anti-freeze) with some compounts that break down the water into a more heat conducting fluid. Check it out. ------------------ C-ya Joe |

don't use antifreeze, it will reduce the heat absorbance of the water. Instead go with a material like Redline's water wetter, this material will prevent corrosion, bacteria, etc. and still keep the heat absorbance of water fairly high. you can actually talk to the guys at your nearest automotive store and they can tell you about that kind of stuff.
best of luck to you on your cooling |

Only use Anti-Freeze if you have below 5C temps.

i use about a 70/30 mix of distilled water/antifreeze, seems to be working fine.

Antifreeze will work, but its thermal properties are significantly worse than those of water so it is best to not use too much.

Heh, here is a concept for you all...
ANTI-FREEZE As in Not Freezing. Unless your chilling your water, or you use your water cooled computer outside in an arctic zone, you generally DON"T use ANTI-FREEZE! Joe is right though, a dash of glycol based additive will help combat corrosion and stuff growing in your water, which in return keeps your system more efficient. I know having Sea Monkeys and Sea Weed looks really neet flowing through your water cooling system, but they don't absorb heat as well as pure water does. Now, on a side note....Water Wetter works by lowering the "Surface Tention" of water. IE, it flows better. Now, does that HELP with Turbulance, or HINDER Turbulance? Any thoughts? I have my own ideas, but what do you guys think?

5/95 or even less streength is plenty for water cooling unless you're chilling the water

anti-freeze is also anti corosive, not just to stop water freezing. So in ambient systems it still has it's place
