Default 4500 no display from vga port

I just picked up a 4500 (4 X 400GB) that was reportedly in good condition. However, once I got it home, I was unable to get it to display anything to the monitor on the VGA port. I get num lock on the keyboard and LEDs 1 & 3 (assuming that 1 is closest to the power button).

I don't know if it's possible to access this server for network configuration via the serial port. Alternatively, is there a master default reset somewhere that will put the network configuration back to a default that I can access?

Any info you can provide would be great...

There is a reset button behind the front bezel.

The second nic port is what you want to connect to if the 1st one is not getting a DHCP from the router. If not the def is 10.10.10.10 if no DHCP is found.

You can use a null modem to the com1 port. (19.2k, n,8,1) Not sure on the baud rate, it's been a while.

OK, so all I get upon boot from the serial port (119200-8-N-1) is "Press <Spacebar> to invoke remote BIOS flash"

I can't seem to get past this point.

Also, the 10.10.10.10 address doesn't seem to work from Port1. I am using a x-over cable with my nic configured as 10.10.10.1/24 on the other end.

If there is no OS to boot the snap that may be as far as you get. You can check to see if the bios is setup correctly as to boot sequence. But the VGA port should be hot as soon as the power is on. During the GOS boot it will turn off the VGA port, and the com1 port will show the kernel load process. The GOS is a Linux Kernel, so you can remove 1 of the drives and look to see if you have any thing on them. If clean you will need someone to preload the HD from a working unit.

I have several partitions, only one of which I can read from my XP box (using IFS Drive). It looks like a standard Linux /boot partition using Grub. The other partions I can't read from this box, so I'll have to throw the drive in my CentOS box when I get home later if I need to see what's on those...

You can go into the BIOS setup and make sure the VGA is not turned off. Remember the display in on active before the GOS starts to load. Once it get that far the Watchdog is turned off, and the the GOS has full control. From what you have told me the unit is working you just have not found in on your network. The Snap Service Manager should be able to locate it. If your router has mapping capabilities, use it's MAC address to an IP you want. And try to find it. Or switch to hub and give it a try. On mine the first time i had to setup a network with the 10.10.10.x subnet to gain access.

Make sure you are using nic2. This is the fallover if it does not get a dhcp server if static. And make sure your not MAC filtering to keep it off.

Mine take roughtly 5 min for it to boot. Once up you have the same hearbeat as the SnapOS along with nic and power. All disk are led's are green.

I've even gone so far as to setup a laptop with 10.10.10.11/24 as the address and using a crossover cable to connect to port 2 on the Snap, but I still cannot reach it via IP.

Also, I cannot get into BIOS because there is no VGA even at post. The hard disks appear to contain the GOS software but I'm concerned there's a hardware issue. What I need at this point are specific instructions on performing the reset (using the white reset button behind the face). Can anyone provide that, or point me toward some good documentation?

Thanks...

OK, so after a LOT of reading, I have gathered some additional information. The only lights I get are the System LED (I believe it's green, but I have red-green color blindness and green vs amber in LEDs is very difficult for me to discern), and a NIC light if connected. I get no lights whatsoever on the HDD LEDs.

Also, as before I get no useful information from the serial port. It just shows the bit about remote bios flash as noted in my earlier post.

I am off try and get it to pickup DHCP one more time, but I suspect with the serial non-responsiveness and the lack of LEDs on the HDDs mean I've got serious hardware issues.

Make sure the ram and cards are seated correctly. May have got jared loose during transport. If it has any cards remove them for now, you can always add them back. If you remove the cmos battery you will have to reset the values back for the unit to boot. If I recall it defaults to a setting that prevents it's from booting.

The GOS has a reset via software, the reset is for clearing admin and a few other settings.

You may need to contact the previous owner on what he did.
