Waterpumps

I need one that's quiet..
I went insane one day and bought the biggest honking water pump i could afford at pets.com..
it's a 666gallon per hour @ 1foot Rio powerhead..
but now i realize this is a waste.. of money and power.. it was also loud as hell

now i'm looking for a ~120-150gph pump.. that's quiet and reliable..
any reccomendations?

Rich W dig's Lil Giant pumps

I personally use all MagDrive pumps, they are both dead quiet, and very reliable. I like the mag drive cause I know how to rip it apart and fix or re-seal anything thats needed.

Yeah.. Little Giant pumps rule (just gotta get the ones that are in the aluminum housing.. the small black ones aren't super good).

Try a RIO 200 you can't hear it and its powerful or use a Ehiem 1046-8 for an inkline pump

ehiems are REALLY quiet

get it from petwhse.com they are literally difficult to hear.

i have to touch mine to know that it is on..it is that quiet

okay, as a former reef aquarium owner, i'd like to say this: Rio pumps suck. Their reliability is the worst in the pet industry. The only brands of pumps suitable in terms of reliability, flow and head(pressure) are Mag-Drive, Maxi-Jet(made in italy, the 1000 is very suitable), and last Little Giant (of the three the maxi-jet are quietest)
other brands like eheim work also but I consider them too much more $$$ for no gain
you may wonder why i put little giant last, it's because most of their smaller pumps are oil filled direct drive pumps, which, while great for pressure, is very bad for reliability. I've still got some pumps from my tank, and i've been using an Iwaki external pump on my rig for some time now (magnetic direct drive) www.anime-unlimited.com/tomservo <- bad pics of my rig
Just my 2 cents worth from 3+ years of saltwater aquarium keeping.
By FAR the quietest pump you can buy is a Quiet One pump sold by Rainbow Plastics (made by Grundfos), less than 23 dB (you have to put it up to your ear to hear it, i own one)

Mmm.. Good info, thanks. I just wanted to add in my 2 cents.. I had the MagDrive from petsmart, Model 1.5, the 140gph one, it was very quiet most of the time, if it got an air bubble trapped in it tho, it'd rattle like mad. I've got the Model 2 now, and I can't really comment on how loud it is until I put some rubber washers on it to stop it from reverberating my whole case. (bad bad bad).

The Big Mag drives have one MAJOR weak point. The plastic front housing.. I hve cracked those in EVERY place you can. Mainly the front "nose" that the intake run screws in.. that cracks all the time. but some RTV fixes it right up

I have a small, cheap Aquanic powerhead mag drive pump.. no idea about performance, but not too bad... and quiet! got it here in thailand for about... 20 US i think... noisy with 1/4" tubing due to back pressure, but real nice with 3/8"

Mine cracked too... It was a pain to get the hose to run into it...

Here's a pic of my replacement waterpump/reservoir.
It's my old reef aquarium pump (1140 GPH, wet rotor direct drive with a ceramic bearing) Yes, i do know it's serious overkill, but it's the pump i have, it suits my requirements for size and noise (small and none, respectively) just fyi, they run about 20 dB and $140 the reservoir is a 4"x4"x4 3/8" marine electrical j-box

If my reservior is about 8 feet away from my computer and the pump will be about 3 feet lower than my waterblock, using the standard 3/8" tubing, what kind of pump would be my best bet? I'd like to get the best and most reliable pump for this kind of application...please help

I've got a 288 GPH pump..

Its complete silent.. except when there's any air in the water..

it only vibrates... so i've put it in foam..
and no more sound...

the height that your pump has to reach doesnt matter once you get water flowing through it since you have a return. you could have it pump water 100 feet up to your ocmputer as long as you have a return line back down 100 feet. they essentially cancel each other out. if your pump does 200gph at 1 foot and 20gph at 3 feet youre going to get 200gph out of it...i'll even put money on that.

Umm the lift is critical cause if you have the peak of the system over the max lift, you will never get coolant over that point the pressure on the pump is too much at that point so the lift height is key.

right...you will have to initially hold the resivoir above the top point, but once the liquid gets to the end of the return hose youre fine. I have a big out of case system so i never thought of having my resivoir be attatched to anything.

imagine u have a rope with 2x 1kg weights on each end and a pulley in the middle...

1.
the rope is 1M long.. u attach the pulley on the ceiling.. on each side u have 50CM and 1KG pulling

u give the one weight a push upward.. what u'll see happening is: one weight moves upwards and one downwards.. only limited by the resistance of the pulley

2.
the rope is 100M long.. u attach the pulley on the ceiling.. on each side u have 50M and 1KG pulling

the result is the same speed as 2, in almost perfect testconditions (no wind etc)

1-2nd.
the rope is 1M long.. u attach the pulley on the ceiling.. on each side u have 50CM and on one side 1KG pulling..

u pull the rope and still need to pull the rope till its on the top..

2-2nd.
the rope is 100M long.. u attach the pulley on the ceiling.. on each side u have 50M and on one side 1KG pulling..

u pull the rope and still need to pull the rope till its on the top.. BUT AL LOT LONGER THAN 1-2nd!!


the only thing u now have to imagine is :
the rope = tubing
the weight = water
the pulley = tap,small tube or sth..


the GPH is calculated on heigth difference of the inlet and outlet... it DOESN'T matter if the tubing is gone 20M up and down.. The pump provides the push and the gravity does the rest of the job for u!
( but the pump has to continually push or else the flow stops)

SO NOW U KNOW!! THE GPH IS LIMITTED BY INLET-OUTLET HEIGHT DIFFERENCE AND THE BOTTLENECKS IN THE TUBE!!

in my setup the water loops every 1.5 seconds!

My setup is huge..I have a 4 gallon resivoir (one of those round orange coolers from sports games) and 3 radiators. Everything is external and I like it more like that, but thats me. My pump can only pump the water about 2 and a half feet above the resivoir (which isnt high enough). This is only a problem if i have to drain the system or something. The way you overcome this is to just lift the resivoir with the pump on until the water makes it over the peak and starts pulling more water as gravity takes hold. Not a problem for me...its nice having my radiators so far away i cant even hear the fans on them!

I have a couple of pictures of my pump on my site at <A HREF='http://liquidcool.org/main.php?zone=500&keyword=watercooler01'>Liquidcoo l.org</A> It is a marine bilge pump that puts out 500gph but at low pressure. It also runs on 12 volts at only a little over 4 watts. Not much more than a 120mm fan... had that particular one running for over 6 months no problems...

For the mini, OCWC sent me a pump that's 150GPH, runs off 120v and it was "dipped" in a silicone rubber. its PERFECTLY SILENT! and will not vibrate on your case or anything! It's very cool

I got a mag drive 1.5 and every so often it starts vibrating really loud for a minute or so and then goes quiet again...do i have a bad bearing or something?
