Default New disks in a SNAP 2000 -sucess!

I've been following the threads on this for a while as I have several of these which have 20 Gb (2x10) drives and are fairly useless today.

These are the odd shaped two drive SNAPs in the rounded plastic cases which split along the seam. They are about 4 years old - maybe 5 - and have the OS in firmware and no on the disks. Good news!

Typical info values would be:

Model Software Hardware Server # BIOS
2000 series 4.0.830 (UK) 2.0.0 38230 2.0.252

The version 4.0 OS is part of the upgrade process - read on!

The drives can be set as a single spanned drive, mirrored or two drives. A single span seems the most common.

Before the u/g the 2000 had version 3.x OS and had a single failed HD and so a broken mirror.

Here's what to do:

1) remove both drives.

2) Insert a new 137Gb or less drive.

3) Power up . and if you are lucky it will auto format. If not, you'll need to go to the debug menu & 'init' it.

That's it!

Note that you need to set the HD to 'cable select'.

If you use a disk larger than 137Gb - say 300 Gb, then only 137 Gb is seen.

But wait - it gets better!

Upgrade the OS to version 4 and 48bit addressing becomes possible, which supports big disks.

Now try it with a 300 or 400 Gb disk - you may need to do:

Debug / "ide 48bitLBACounter reset" / "ide 48bitLBACounter get" result "0"
Debug / reinit

but then it 'sees' all 300Gb.

Try it with 2 disks - and span them - even better!
