Default Replace Failed Drive 4100

Help -

I have a hard drive failing. I have successfully backed up the data on a different machine so ok for now.

My server contains four Seagate U10 MODEL ST320423A drives. (20.4 GB)

I assume I need to find an exact replacement drive but it looks like they have been discontinued a long time ago.

Where can I find a replacement drive? Is there a list of compatible drives? Should I replace all four drives with new higher capacity units since these are so old? If so, can you recommend item and source please?

Any help you guys offer is greatly appreciated.
Thanks much

You are right Drive 2 (10008) has failed. And their all the same age, so other are a comming. Since you have all of your data backed up, I would upgrade to 120gig drives. I will be cheaper than trying to find that 20 gig drive.

Buy Seagate 7200.9, and maybe a 5th if you really want to play it self, for further down the line. The only other thing I can sugest is maybe expand your ram to 256meg.

As for a source. Outpost.com, Newegg.com, Zipzoomfly.com, Compusa to just name a few. The 120's should sell for around $40-50 now. This is based on 300's for $90.

Default Re: Replace Failed Drive 4100

I just found out my server is under "software" warranty for another few months but not "hardware". They had me download their latest copy of the OS: SnapOS_4_0_860.exe it is a little over 21mb.

The software tech said to just pull all four drives install all four new drives and the OS is in an eprom and will install. Once installed go to the gui and update the os to 4.0

I thought I read somewhere here that the os was not in the eprom but he said it would work- he verified it with several other techs.

Why are so many posting requests for 3.4.805 when 4.0 is the latest?

thanks

The 4000, 4100, 1000, 2000 models have OS stored in flashram.

The procedure he gave you is correct.

V4 does not play well with some of the older hardware. V3 is more popular mainly because it is the latest OS they are giving out free, depending on age.

Check your ram capacity, "debug memory" from debug. The larger drives and v4 like a min of 128meg, can max out on 256meg.

looks like Total System Physical Memory: 67108864

would that be 67mb?

What kind of memory does it take? I do not see quantum or snap listed at crucial.com

Can you guys point me to a source for 256mg?

Hi Crystallake,

I just updated my 4100 (dell 705n) with 256mb ram. I used Kingston ValueRAM:

KVR133X64C3Q/256 - ValueRAM SDRAM PC133 256MB

It works fine. The ram is double sided (low density). I bought it here in Germany, so I cann't give you a shopping address in the USA. Sorry.

greetings nick

Like Blue said, 4.x doesn't like some of the older hardware. The other reason is that unless you need Active Directory support, upgrading to 4.x isn't really neccessary.

And it's a little slower. 3.4.805 and 3.4.807 are pretty much optimal as far as good features/support.

Where do I get those earlier versions? Do you think snap will provide them in lieu of 4.0?

Correction: I posted my snap had four Seagate U10 MODEL ST320423A drives. (20.4 GB) Today when I opened it I found three original Quantum fireball 40gb and one newer 80gb I forget the model.

The 20.4gb I had lying around was a spare for one of our old cobal raq boxes - I confused myself.

But now I will be installing the four new 120gb - they should be here tomorrow. Should I call Snap to get 805 or 807 instead of 4.0?

You can, good luck on getting it from them though. And you'll likely have to pay for support.

I do have a valid software contract - it is good for another few months.

Here is their response to my question.

Bob,

The OS version you requested is obsolete, but since you are rebuilding this server you can give it a try. If you run into problems with this version and need to put in a service call, I am sure one of the first recommendations is going to be to upgrade to 4.0.860. All that being said, here is the info to get 3.4.807 software

------------------------------

So now I also have 3.4.807 and my harddrives should be here within a couple of hours.

I notice that 3.4.807 is only 12MB while 4.0.860 is 21MB

They sure added something big to 4.0

My unit had 64mb and I replaced that with a 128mb stick I had lying around.

So soon I will have 4 x 120gb with 128mb--
do you guys really suggest I not install 4.0?

thanks

Then you're all set See if they'll give you access to the 4.0 OS's as well, and download them so you can have them for later use.

That is proably the compressed files size, should be close to 30 meg when extracted.

I installed the new drives and it did recognize immediately and began to format.

I never noticed the cpu fan starts and stops I guess as it gets hot but boy when it runs it is crazy loud. Do you guys think that means I am about to lose the cpu fan?

The label of the fan only states
Globe Cooler
CPU Cooler
Ball Bearing
and someone has written with a felt pen the number 1 to the left of the globe and a plus sign to the right

If you recommend fan replacement can you recommend model and source please?

I would be totally lost without this forum.
thanks

ok.. going to install 4.0 first but there are three files to choose from..

snap_jvm.sup 4651kb
snap_ServerSync.sup 164kb
snap_sys.sup 30093kb

I am choosing snap_sys.sup thinking jvm sounds like java virtual machine? and I don't think I need to sync my server with anything at the moment. The notes do not mention three files... odd

You are correct.

Snap_sys is the snap OS.
JVM is java
ServerSync is for server to server backup

IN regards to the Fan:
I have noticed the same thing on mine. I've had the fan since the begining and never had any indication of failure or overheating. I don't know if anyone has replaced it, but I imagine that any fan you can stick on there and wire up will work, as long as it has decent airflow (more than say 20 CFM).

I am also having hardware issues with my Snap Server 4100. I have tried to call support, but somebody in my department let the contract lapse 7years, so they won't even talk to me. I had the SnapOS_4_0_860.EXE file, but now that i actually need it, it is telling me that it is corrupt and will not extract. Does anybody have this file that i could use so i can get my device back online?

i know...7years and we're still using it...WOW. lol

Sorry we are not allowed to distribute copyrighted material.

If your server is already at v4 you should not need it. The OS is stored in flashram.

Default Re: Replace Failed Drive 4100

ok I have a question in regards to my snap server M4100.
I currently have 4x100gb drives
Software: 3.4.803
Bios: 2.4.437

It seems no one has been successful at installing Large Hard drives in this server so I'm guessing I'm stuck with a max of 4x120gb's.

The primary question I have is upgrading the OS. I have version 3.4.805, 4.0.830 and 4.0.860 and wanted to know what is the best OS to use for this older server?

I understand that 4.0.860 is the only one that has Active Directory support which I don't really need at this point which leads me to the question of which OS should I upgrade to, because I know if I go all the way to 4.0.860 there is no going back to a previous version.

Thanks,

I like the latest OS (v4.0.860) on the 4100.

Since the 4100 does not support LBA48 you can install 160gig's but only 130 will be used. You can install 400gig and it will work, clamped at 130gig thought.
