You can download v4.0.860 from www.adaptec.com

Thanks,

I have downloaded the 4.0.860 version from Adaptec, but am unable to install the OS upgrade portion. I can install the Sync and JVM portions, but it will not install the OS upgrade. I understand from earlier posts that I need to upgrade from 3.4.x using a different upgrade.

What version are you currently at?

Did you also read that v4 can turn them into door stops?

I just bought a 4100 with 3.1.618. Does anyone have a 3.4.805 or (preferably) a 4.x they could send to paul@the-samuelsons.com?

Thanks,

Paul

I don't think you want v4 for large disk support. The sucess rate has been extremely low. Since the 4100 stores the OS in flashram. Upgrades are not reversable.

OK. How about 3.4.803 or 3.4.805 (which I understand supports large disks)?

3.4.805 is you best bet. Most have tried v4 to find it doesn't work.
The 4100 has a hardware problem related to the promise controllers. In v4 the 48bitLBA is locked out on the 4100.

I'm Sorry, I may not have given enough information.

I have 2 Snap Server 2200s. These both have SnapOS version 3.4.790 with hardware versions 2.0.4 and BIOS versions 3.4.758. These are both functioning correctly using HDDs < 130GB. I am only looking to upgrade the OS in order to enable support for 250GB hard drives. I see that poogles_uk is running a similar 2200 and has successfully used a 250GB HDD in it.

I have downloaded the SnapOS v4.0.860 upgrade from Adaptec and updated the JVM and Sync software on these servers. They will not accept the SnapOS upgrade. As I thought I understood from reading these threads, I first need to upgrade the servers to SnapOS v4.0 and then upgrade to 4.0.860. If this is not necessary to enable support for 250GB HDDs in the 2200s please correct me.

If this is correct, and I need to first upgrade to SnapOS v4.0, could someone please give me the details on how to obtain this or another version of the OS which will allow access to large HDDs. I will happily donate to the cause if I can get these working.

Thank You
David

I have 2 x 300gig in my 2200. Runing OS v4.0.860. I run in Raid 1 configuration.

If you want to upgrade drives. The easiest is set snap up in Raid1. Then fail 1 drive at a time. Install a replacement. After it has mirrored. Fail the other. and do the process again. Its best to fail drive 0, witch is the bottom drive, if you are going up on capacity. But the way raid works it shouldn't matter.

I understand that I should be able to use large drives in my 2200 with a 4.0.xxx OS version. However, my 2200s have 3.4.790 on them and I cannot install the 4.0.860 that I can download from Adaptec. I understand from previous posts that I must first use a full 4.0 OS upgrade of SnapOS and then I can upgrade to 4.0.860. What I am looking for is information on how I can get the full SnapOS v4.0. Otherwise, if you can tell me how I can use the 4.0.860 file from adaptec to upgrade from 3.4.790 I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for the help. I now have 2 Snap Server 2200s running SnapOS version 4.0.860 with 2x250GB HDDs in each one. This is working very well and the performance is good.

I have another question that I can't seem to find any information on in this forum or elsewhere.

Is it possible for a Snap Server to spin down its drives when it is idle? This is potentially a major issue since 7200 rpm drives spinning 24x7 even with good cooling are not going to last long. I find no setting for this in SnapOS except possibly a vague reference to IDE power in the "bios flags" command output.

If I execute "bios flags +sleep" it returns the following:

Bios Boot Flags:

Auto Reboot is Enabled
Forced Broadcast mode is Disabled
Forced Promiscuous mode is Disabled
L1 Cache is Enabled
L2 Cache is Disabled

Enet Flags (0xFEED):

IDE Power off is by Sleep Command

If I execute "bios flags -sleep" it returns the following:

Bios Boot Flags:

Auto Reboot is Enabled
Forced Broadcast mode is Disabled
Forced Promiscuous mode is Disabled
L1 Cache is Enabled
L2 Cache is Disabled

Enet Flags (0xFEEC):

IDE Power off is by IDE-Reset assertion

The unit does not seem to spin down its disks regardless of which of these settings are used. I know Guardian OS has a spindown feature, but I find no similar option in SnapOS. If anyone has any idea how to get a 2200 or any other model running SnapOS to spin down it's drives, I'd appreciate the help.

Sorry there is no such cmd for sleep mode. These units were built for 24/7 operation.
That is why the factory installs interprise quality drives. My 2200 runs cool. I installed a high output fan when I did the upgrade. That is also why I run RAID 1, I expect drives to fail when under this kind of service. Heat is the biggest factor. As long as the drvies are kept cool you will get good service. Seagates carry a 5 yr warranty, most others have 3 yr. I expect to use the warranty some where down the line. If not I got execelent service. In after 5 yrs I will proably replace them and fan before they fail. Put a tag on it some where for when the drives were installed. The 2200 I bought only had 3 yrs of service. Most fans last 3-5 years.

These units perform real good with there deciated promose controllers. I was looking for one when I bought my 2000, but didn't want to spend the big bucks for them. At that time the 2000 on ebay were going for $200-$300, where the 2200 were $700. Looked at the 4X00 models but didn't have the space to put it.

Yeah, as david has said

It has to be the hardware that supports LBA-48 bit, rather than the software in most cases

Hence no look whatsoever with a 4100

Instead of continuing to thread-jack the 3.4.805 thread...

Is there any chance someone could send me a link or possibly post the 4.x full upgrade on rapidshare or something. I have an M4100 running 3.4.803 and would like to upgrade it to 4.0.860, but I need the full version of 4.0.830 or 4.0.855 to get there.

I've searched high and low for it on the net, googled, etc. and I just haven't been able to find it.

THE 4100 CAN NOT and WILL NOT SUPPORT LARGE DISK >137gig .

Stick with v3 unless you need MS 2003 server AD support, I think that was added. v4 need more ram.

I do not want, nor care about large disk support. As stated in the other thread, all I am interested in is the 2003 active directory support. In neither post did I ever say anything about large disk support.

Most are wanting to put large disk in and don't even know about MS 200k AD support.

Good luck

I am in the process of getting a 1000 40gb. I do not know the version of operating system it has installed, or its actual condition, but I am looking at putting a 250gb drive in it. From everything I have been reading, I suspect that I will need to upgrade the OS. In preparation, can someone email me 3.4.805, or whatever seems appropriate. I have a 200 mb email limit.

There are 2 version of the 1000. The early version 1 had the OS stored in flashram. Then the later ones (v2) were like the 1100's, using a boot bios, with os on HD. Let us know the vitals when you get it. We will then assist you in getting it up and running. If you can connect with no drives installed, you have a v1. If v2 you will need to copy the boot tracks from the old HD to the new one. You will need assist after rsetting the snap, I will email the resetting instruction to you.

Hi,

got an 1000 running with an old & noisy 30GB HDD that needs an upgrade.
The web-interface does not come up when the drive is disconnected from the controller, so it _seems_ to be a v2, if i understand this correctly.

More Info:
Software: 2.3.417 (Ge)
Hardware platform:3.1.1 Model:1 (32 MBytes)
BIOS: 2.1.364

Any info on how to switch to a new 160GB drive appreciated

Use dd (from Knoppix LiveCD) to copy the fist 25 meg of your 30 gig to the new 160. If you all data on it copy all of the 30 gig. Then issue "co de format 10000 /reinit" from debug. To get full capacity (>137gig) you will need either 3.4.805 or v4. Those are the only version that support LBA48bit Addressing.

Instruction for use DD is posted in the wiki section. It does not specifly cover going from hd to hd. Just need to substitue the source file to a dev/hd? where the 30gig is mounted at.

If you need more specific help with dd let us know.
