well ok guys let me try to shed some real life info hands on i should say of converting a (lets say r12 to r134).now i have been buying and installing changeover systems ever since there was the new kid r134a out.now the compressors i have sold over the years( last 12 years i say) are made 134a but can easily be changed over with no problem to r12.we most of the time take the compressor and turn upside down and warm the unit alowing all the oil as possable to drain for a hour or so.now r12 doesnt like pag oil very well(r134oil)but it will with stand a small amount of mixing.now putting r134 in a r12 sysyem is the same way but the pag oil mixes alot easyer.pag oil is designed to allow for a small amount of mixing with minerial oil.now i sell orings for these systems and i will tell you there is no differance in the orings.
now i see you already know that removing water from the system with a good vacuum is a must.......but allowing a vacuum to stay on a system for too long will break down the oil in the system doing alot more harm than good.i usally run it for about 1 hour on a small system. 8 hours would be on a very large system.we service on the highway 18 wheelers people call them,,,road tractors .600hp diesels that haul everthing well all use everyday.these systems use 2.5 to 3 lbs of r134a.and we only vacuum them for a couple of hours at the most.these systems are 10 times the size of the systems we are building for a pc.i know alot of guys in here are very smart people and can read the specs on anything.but real the world sometimes is a little differant.i am not guesing or reading some elses stuff i have done it myself.i guess going on 20 years now.but i am not to old too learn.........that is why i come in here. one of the best forums on the internet and i am proud to be part of this fourm

bowman, u think i should invest in switching to R502? Where could I get an expansion valve and an accumulator?

well to be honest r502 is nice but really too much for what you get.too much cost involved.i dont even use it.we specialize in moble ac units which usaually use r12...r134a...r22.
now r22 will get very cold.boiling point is -40f @ 0 psi.mine will run down to -60f but i had it running in a hard vacuum.all depends on what you what to do.now the accumulator you will need to make for a small system like yours i havent heard of anyone using on on a small system.I made one but found it didnt do me any good.on a pc you are running under a load 100% of the time.not meaning the cpu is loaded 100% but that you are making heat all the time so the compressor needs to run full time.i have tried cycling the compressor on and off and there is no way the compressor can come back on and catch up to the heat load.to be honest on mine if i cut the compressor off for one minute i have to wait about 1 hour before i can restart it because the liquid runs back in the compressor after i cut it off.now if i didnt have mine cooling so low in the temps this wouldnt be a problem but running a xp2100 @2150 mhz @ -42c takes alot from a cooling system.i would stay with a capillary tube system no expanson vavle.the expansion vavle would not work as well on a small system.and all we use at work uses a expansion vavle so i would use it if i thought it would work better.

Thanks bowman! My info is second hand and from fuzzy memory on the conversion stuff. So, real experience is exactly what we needed to really answer the question.

bowman, i am running a water chiller and NOT direct on die evaporator. I am really worried all the liquid is gonna kill the compressor too soon.

WELL IF YOU HAVE LIQUID ENTERING THE COMPRESSOR NOW, YOU HAVE TO FIX IT SOON.2 THINGS TO DO ,EASYEST IS TO REMOVE SOME FREON UNTILL IT STOPS,DOWNSIDE TO THIS IF YOU DONT HAVE ENOUGHT AREA IN THE EVAP. YOU WILL GO FROM COOLING WITH LIQUID ENTERING THE COMPRESSOT TO NO COOLING AT ALL.SECOND AND THE BEST THING TO DO IS TO ADD 10 FT OR SO TO THE EVAPORATER TUBING.THIS WELL GIVE THE FREON ADDED TIME TO BOIL OFF INTO A GAS.OR IF YOU ARE USING SOMETHING THAT YOU ARE UNABLE TO ADD MORE TUBING TO.TRY TWO THINGS. GET YOURSELF A WATER PIPE HEATER THE ONES LIKE YOU WRAP AROUND WATER PIPES TOP KEEP THEM FROM FREEZING,AND WRAP THE RETURN LINE TO THE COMPRESSOR THIS WILL GIVE YOU ENOUGHT EXTRA HEAT TO BOIL OFF THE LIQUID BEFORE IT MAKES IT TO THE COMPRESSOR
(SOUNDS CRAZY BUT IT WILL WORK WITHOUT BREAKING THE SYSTEM DOWN.SECOND THING IS TO WRAP 10 FT AROUND THE COMPRESSOR ITSELF AND HAVE THE RETURN LINE GO AROUND THE COMPRESSOR BEFORE IT GOES INTO THE COMPRESSOR.THIS WILL MAKE SURE YOU GET ALL THE FREON BOILED OFF AND HELP COIL THE COMPRESSOR.
I HOPE THIS HELPS

It is a pipe heater, keeps pipes from freezing in the winter.I have seen them at bi-mart.
