How long will Intel scale the P4?
Seriously? I mean, we've gone from 1ghz, 400mhz FSB, 256kb cache
to 2.4Ghz, 512kb cache, 533mhz FSB... When will it stop being a P4, and be some other chip?

it's from 1.3 to 2.53. and the 1.5's came out on launch date.
.13u won't last for too much longer, but .09 will come, as will even more L2 cache, and an even faster frontside bus.

More L2 =
I was taking a stab at the numbers, wasn't really sure. The more and more we go along, the more I wanna go back to intel, and get that nice warm fuzzy with a 3ghz processor. (overclocking to 3 anyways)

It'll probably switch to the P5 with the introduction of the Prescott core. (.09µ, 512KB L2) But there are never any guarantees.
*** Actually I just looked up some schedules, and it looks like the Prescott will still be a P4. Hmmmmm.....interesting question.

After a little more research, the name doesn't seem to be related to die size, process, wafer size or anything like that. If anything it could be related to the introduction of new programming (i.e. SSE3, or NetBurst 2, or something of the like), but I don't have the facts to draw that pattern yet. At the moment it seems somewha arbitrary. So when Intel decides to call it the Pentium V, that's when it will no longer be the P4.

the P6 core went from PPro 160mhz to Tualatin P3 1400mhz. Think of all the changes, chipsets, cache arrays, etc the P6 went through

Pfft...
I suspose it's just cheaper to keep the same name, less marketing and you don't have to print a new logo!
