Default I'm using Winbond Hardware Doctor and I was wondering:

what is the "system" temp?
I've heard it's the northbridge temp, and I've also heard it's the ambient temp in the case.

So which is it? Or is it something totally different?

Thanks

"System Temp" is a small thermal sensor that is located on your motherboard somewhere close to your NorthBridge that is suppose to measure your ambient case temperature. This is not an accurate reading on your ambient temperature in your computer room but a close idea of how warm the air around that part of the motherboard is.

At least that is what I think. I could be wrong but not by much.

That's correct. The temp probe is either part of the ASIC, or on a seperate chip, but definitely on the mobo.

Sounds like it's sort of a combination of both from what these guys said. I would say look on your mobo and see if you can see a little probe in that area. My "System temp" is reported as 33°C, while my true ambient is 26°C. So, granting the inaccuracies of it all, it seems like a large disparity to just be "close" to the NB, as opposed to on or underneath the actual chip.
