Snap server 2000
Hi there,
I am new to this web site, but it seemed to be the place for Snap server answers, so here goes. I bought a used Quantum Snap server 2000 for my home network, was assured it was working, but can't seem to onnect to it at all. Everything I could find so far on the web seemed to say it would just come right up, which seemed too easy to me. It did not come right up in Explorer so I am lost. It does power up, and if I plug in a network cable I get link and activity lights. It has a part or model number on the back of 70700027-001 and a serial number of 39508 also. I was wondering if there was a management package that can be installed to look for these devices, and is there a PDF manual out there somewhere? I have found the adaptec information, but it is for newer models and doesn't seem quite right for this unit. I have also read that the best older OS to run is the 34805 one. If so, is that still available, and where? Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much in advance. - Paul |

Re: Snap server 2000
Some units of the 2000 will not support hd >137gig.
As far as access you may need to reset the system back to factory settings. After it has been reset you will need a copy of Assist to do the initial setup. Reset instruction are in the wiki section. You may want to try resetting network only at first to see if it show up on your network. If you do not have the admin password you will need to reset all.

Re: Snap server 2000
Thank you blue68f100 for your reply. I am sorry, but I should have said that I tried several resets based on information from this website, with no success. Where can I get a copy of the Assist you referred to? I was also under the impression that the OS 34805 was the only release of version 3 that would allow larger hard drives.

Re: Snap server 2000
You will need the assist to do the initial setup. Those models default to 0.0.0.0 for the IP address.
One you are able to gain access you will be able to get vitals. If you opened the case, v1 have SIMM's Ramm whild v2 has DIMM's.

Re: Snap server 2000
Well I guess I have a real problem. I connected the Snap server to the network, powered it up and ran the Assist software. It said there are no servers on this network. I am at a loss. I tried to do a reset as described, but did not get the correct responses on the LEDs. Right now I have a double flashing System LED, a steady Link LED, randomly flashing Net LED and a steady Disk LED if that helps.

Re: Snap server 2000
Okay, I tried some more things and I believe I got into the Snap server now. I was wondering if anybody can tell me how large of drives this unit will handle. It shows me -
Server #39508 Software Version: 3.4.803 Hardware Version: 2.0.0 BIOS Version: 2.0.252 I believe that it has 10GB drives in it now, and I would like to take it up to maybe 250GB drives if possible. I am curious if this will work, and also what would be the best type of drives and RPM speed to use, as far as access, and even more so, running cool? Thank you for your help. |

Re: Snap server 2000
This one is for Dave I think. When it comes to the 2000, it can have a couple variations. The serial number should tell you, but I don't know where the break point is. Dave (or Shane should know)...

Re: Snap server 2000
The 2000 were never design for the 7200 rpm drives. This is mainly a heat issue. By your serial number you have one of the early early v2 which supports LBA48bit (hd >137gig) with the proper OS. (READ NOTICE AT TOP OF THREAD) So installing 2 x 250gig drives should work. I would recommend replacing the cooling fan too, higher cfm.
Procedure would be like this. 1. Update the OS to version 3.4.805 or 3.4.807 , I don't recommend v4 for these older units. 2. Power down and replace both drives. Make sure you match your original drive configuration M/S or CS. 3. Restart, It will take about 10 min before you will have admin access. It takes that long for the OS to be decompressed and copied to the HD. Once you can connect, you can monitor progress from the drive status. 4. Once the format has completed verify capacity. OK 5. You can now start the RAID 1 build, this takes a long time, 12+ hrs for 250 gig drives. Be Patient it will get there.

Re: Snap server 2000
So, based on what you said, would you recommend 5400RPM drives, maybe Seagates? Also, from all I have read up here, I totally understand about v4 and what you recommend. Where would I get OS v3.4.805 or 3.4.807 to upgrade with? When would I do that in the process, before changing drives, or after?

Re: Snap server 2000
I've got 2x400gb drives in mine so i dont see why 2x250's wouldnt work.

Re: Snap server 2000
Thanks Hallis. Do you have the same hardware and BIOS versions, just with upgraded SNAP OS software? What speed and make of drives? I am concerned about temperature in the unit.

Re: Snap server 2000
they're older revision seagate drives, so they draw more current than the 7200.10's do. I'm running OS 3.4.807. I dont remember my BIOS or hardware versions. The serial # is in the 40k area. It's burried under more stuff right now and not hooked up as i was restructuring my desk area. It's a V2 unit though.

Re: Snap server 2000
If it's only seeing 10gig can be caused by old OS v1 or v2. Did you notice if it had a SIMM's or DIMM's ram chip?
Your SN is large enough to be a V2 made by Quantum. Click on the Snap Appliance Logo on the admin page for vitals and post HW & SW versions.

Re: Snap server 2000
Here are the stats for my server... Software Ver 2.0.279 - Hardware Ver 2.0.0 - BIOS Ver 2.0.252. Just added in a PC133 DIMM, so I must have the later version? Strange that my capacity would actually go down by adding larger drives. I guess the free 3+ version would fix the problem??

Re: Snap server 2000
Well, after some sleuthing on the net, I've managed to upgrade my server to version 3.1.603. Both drives' capacity are what they should be @ 80/ea. Does anyone know if I need to further update beyond this version?
