interesting idea brad. have you tried it before? i was thinking not only could you reduce turbulence on the top of the blades, but you could also remove the material in a way that better balances the rotor. precise balancing is very important. balancing not only reduces noise & vibration, but it also quiets the origin of turbulence (pressure perturbations at specific frequencies). i haven't taken apart my Deltas to see how well the factory balances them, but i'm sure improvements are possible. even if you couldn't remove enough plastic to balance it, maybe adding weight is possible (like balancing the wheels on a car).

I'm wondering why you bought a delta when you want a quiet fan.

I've done it a couple of times - it really does help quite a bit.

you could also isolate the fan from transferring its vibrations to the case, by using rubber fan plugs or sticking the fan onto where u're mounting it with something like RTV silicon adhesive (done this on my AX-7 with panaflow works a charm)

I can vouch for Brad on this one too. I recently sanded down my Sunon 120mm fan with 600 then 1500 grit sandpaper and I personally believe that it dropped the noise level from 42db to about 38-39db (NOT scientifically proven).
Sanding does make a difference! Now I hear my HDDs more than my 120mm fan
