Default Server Maint news

Well hand in hand with the server upgrade of the OS that happened this week, this weekend I have upgraded 2 of the 3 main services that I plan on upgrading.

We went form MySQL 3.23.58 to 4.1.17 and PHP 4.32 to 5.01 Both of which are fairly complex.

We have run into some issues wiht some code used on the ProCooling and MWL pages (and many other vbb modders will see the same soon when they go to v5 PHP) with some forum interface code that uses the forums formatting system. I am going to work on this Sunday night to fix, as I know how I can fix 99% of the scripts rapdly.

At least were still online! hehe

Apache was slated to be upgraded tonight also, but I dont have balls that big after seeing both SQL and PHP almost blow sky high themselves.

Hmm, I think I'll stick with PHP 4.3.9 and MySQL 4.0.2 for a while then.

Why not edit the php ini's files so php4 is handled by php4 and php5 is handled by php5? Probably to late now anyway...

Wow you were running old versions... the latest stable builds of php is 4.39 IIRC and mysql is 4.0.22 I guess you are going with the beta's then? You are braver than I.

Indeed. I've got about 100 sites to worry about when I upgrade, so it may take me an awful long time to do the upgrade. I'll wait until cPanel decides they are stable, and then make sure everything still works.

Umm current builds for MySQL are 4.17 and PHP is above 5.02.

And this isnt an issue with PHP, this is all a problem with some shoddy code that was in some scripts.

cPanel sucks btw, and for that matter so does Ensim (which is on this server) and Plesk. Most all the managment apps are VERY sub par and far too tied to the services on the machine.

CPanel is what I got on my server now. I agree. I also got the CPanel web host manager and it is for shit to. I had Ensim before that and it sucked to. To many god damn bugs and updates/pathces/new versions (whatever the hell they call it to make them sleep better at night).

Many people have had older php scrips go to shit because they were not up to php5 standards and a few hosts have made the mod to run php4 and php5 together. Luckily my host still uses php4 as my forums on a few sites would die. Hope some decent work around is in place if they go to php5. They said they will not untill it is stable with all the scripts they offer in CPanel. Heh.....

Anyway, looking forward to the new homepage as I understand there was one before?

I use them mainly as they make handling things much easier. Being born and bred with Windows, Linux Terminal is like a foreign language. cPanel at least adds a GUI, even if I still have to dig into the terminal now and again. I'm still figuring out some of the stuff, especially working with vi.

After reading that few if anyone has found ways to fix this completely. There are some hack fixes, but none that do everything. I am going to fix this myself. by writing my own string analysis and replacement engine to read the formatting codes from the vbb database and on its own substitute the proper items. Also data restrictions content length. It will take me a week or so to get it done (maybe longer) so the front page will look like it does for a bit longer. (just the site news looks a lil funky and the recent articles and recent reviews arent hyperlinked.

Well it had to be done though. THe old ass versions of PHP and MySQL not only had known exploits but were also slowing the server down. MySQL and PHP5 have been a kick in the ass for performance on the server. I just got done turning on all the features of SQL4.1's caching and query speed is up 50% from what it was!

I also adjusted priorities for a few of the other systems on the server (the mailscanner portion mainly since its a CPU hog) to make it so SQL and HTTPD have full speed when they need it.

Tonight I am going to start looking at what needs to be done to get the re-write action going on for the vbb stuff... Its something I havent looked at before, so its going to be a learning experience.

Uhh there seems to be an issue now with vbbs re-direction on the DB, I need to check it. Some of the settings just enabled could not be vbb friendly, but I cant think which it would be. Looking at error logs now.

Fixed, there was a corrupt entry in a table that vbb was able to find and fix.

Sorry for the DB downtime, seems when the monkeys at the data center went to take the old HD out of the server they crashed MySqlD today.

Its back up and online now.

I am going to be working tonight on getting the code to work on the front page again, TOnight is one of those rare nights I am not going out drinking, not racing R/C, not LAN'n, not sleeping, etc... So I am going to sit down and geek out and hopefully get this thing to work
