Default Question about Snap 4000 and Raid 5

I recently upgraded my drives to 300gb x 3. yesterday i added 4th 300gb drive and system picked it up and format it with no problems.

I removed my current raid 5 configuration which consisted of 3 disks and created new one. formating of the disks took over 2 hours but it was done. right now its already been 10 hours and its still rebuilding backup disk at 1%. Is this normal or should it be faster? anyway to check the logs to see if there is anything wrong?

here is what the log says right now:

There has been several reports of this happening in the 4000 models. The bad news is that most have given up, with no resolve
There was one resent post a couple of weeks ago of one installing 300gigs, but do not recall if he was runing RAID5.
I believe it is a problem with LBA48bit. Large drive >137gig. Snap locked it out in the 4000, so not to compete against the 4100. This bit need to be turned on.
Did you check the capacity of the RAID5 with just 3 drives?

Good Luck

Hi,

I've got a 4000 with (3) 300Gig HDs. I've left the 4th drive as the original 30Gig to hold my Snap stuff. I have 3 identical Seagate Barracuda ATA/100 ST3300831A-RK drives and it all went without a hitch. The formatting took an hour or so, but the RAID rebuild took many hours, so be patient. I didn't try a 4th drive so I can't help there. I'm also running v4.0.830 of the OS. I know I'm not providing any answers, but for FYI - mine works.

my show up as 300gb drives. so LBA48 is not a problem. problem is that its taking alot of time to rebuild backup disk when i was doing 4 drives in Raid 5 config. rebuiling took 2% every 24 hours. with 3 drives in raid 5 and one hot spare, total time took 10 hours to format and rebuild backup. I'm not sure what it is but its taking alot of time when its 4 drives being used. how did u keep ur 30gb and put your snap stuff on it?

When I first got the system, it was virgin, with 4x30Gig. I upgraded the SnapOS to 4.0.830 which was the highest at the time. I then decided to upgrade it to 3x300Gig because I didn't have the other $100 for the 4th 300Gig. I replaced 3 of the 30's with the 3-300's and the OS found them and formatted them which took about 2 hours. Then I went to configure the disks and selected the 3-300Gigs for RAID 5, and didn't select the 30Gig. Then the server re-booted and took about another hour to format the RAID and about 18 hours to rebuild the RAID. Sharing the RAID and sharing the 30Gig put two different drives on the network. The 30Gig is what I am using to just place all my Snap files on. I have about 6 different Snap servers here at the house.

Since I haven't tried a 4th 300Gig, I can't comment on using it as a spare but since I have other places to use the drive, I am. I just bought another 300Gig HD and I'm putting it in my Snap 1100.

One thing though - I tried Poogle_UK's Server Sync that doesn't need a license key and started copying files to the 4000 from my 2200 and about an hour into the exchange, the 4000 crapped and all the files were lost, RAID missing and even the 30Gig got erased. I can't comment for sure if the hacked Server Sync was the problem but I'm not putting it on again.

thanks for the reply. so far mine is working great with 3 drives in raid 5 and 4th as a spare. just finished loading all my files on it and still have space left it would have been nice to get all 860gigs raid 5 volume, but i couldn't wait any longer. the way it was going, it would have been done in about 180 days (without turning the power off to it). and i didn't feel like paying $120 to adaptec tech support to ask them what to do. where did u get the server sync without the key? also if you don't me asking, how do u use ur 6 snaps? just curisous.

thanks

It looks like your up and going. I just got my Snap 4000 running with 4 160gig drives, 3 western Digitals and one Seagate. The Raid 5 formated in about 12 hours with all 4 disks as part of the RAID 5 disk. 450 gigs of usable space! Only snafu I ran into was a Maxtor ATA133 which the server didn't like on first install, I removed that drive just in case even though it had worked after a reboot. I am running on 4.0.860 with version 2 of the server (all drives are set to cable select).

thanks for reply. sorry didn't visit this for a while. i'm still running my snap with 4 300 gb drives, but use 3 in raid 5 and keep 1 as hot spare. haven't figured out why it was taking so long. i do have maxtor 300gb ata-133 drives so maybe thats the problem. however besides the formatting, i haven't had any problems.

Hi, I have a problem in that my Snap crapped out, says that 2 drives are orphans from my RAID5 array (total of 7 drives) after a "Fatal Error" occured on the LCD. I had to do a hard reset of the OS as the WEB GUI could not be accessed at all after the error. Is there any way to make one of the Orphan to join back? At least the array would be in a degraded but still functioning state. All individual drives are showing as OK now after I did a hard reset, but I can't access my RAID5.

Does anyone tried upgrading Snap Guardian OS2 to OS3 with the upgrade posted in Adaptec Website? For I've tried it but with major problem with MS Win Active directory service.
Once in a week I'll have to reboot the Snap 14000 series to have it running again, does anyone know how to fix this problem?

You may be running short on memory.
Most of us are using the older units or have converted Dell's 705. There was one user that upgrade a 14000 with Guardian v 2.6, was 2.4. This was the first version that supported MS Active directory. If you paid for the update or under waranty contact Adaptec/SnapAppliance Support and report the BUG. If not, It may cost you $130 for tech support. I would try a memory upgrade first if its out of warranty.

Thanks, but for guardian os2 I've also tried it on the 4400 which has been upgraded to a version 2.6. but to a 2003 server it still would not release the active directory service to the snap. As I've been inform that version 2 will only support until the active directory in server 2000 and version 3 will support until server 2002 and version 4 will be able to support until server 2003. For this is there anyone who can clarified this?
