With regard to the benchmarks Jason was referring to, I think they were on FiringSquad back when Win XP first came out.
Personally, I've done over 20 XP installs so far, and ever since around the build 2495 mark (and moreso after RC2), it's been rock solid. Perhaps not quite as stable as Win2k, but certainly more aethetically pleasing. If you do a standard install I must agree - its hella bloated - but if you know your way round the registry and regsvr32 you can trim a bit of the fat (*cough, remote access, system restore, a tone (tonn?) of services, startup config, etc.*). It really depends on what you're wanting to do with the OS. A power user should be able to get ALMOST any OS working for their needs providing the software/driver support is there. |

as i thought....like i said its pointless to try to compare a os that has been out for 2years to an os that has been out for less then a year...yea xp has alot of CRAP! pure and utter crap but still some of that crap might have value down the line...on my personal system ive only had to reinstall xp twice, once wuz my fault (dont go messing with the reg less ur sure what it does) and the second time my hd in my raid array went out.....yea i can use 98 or 2k if i have to, i just dont like to first off 98 is just plain old...(in computer terms) and 2k is basicly geared too pro users...win nt + win 2k + some new inovations = win xp

xp is crap designed for stupid people coming from an imac or a game boy trying to get on aol.
win2k rocks. the only thing I'd like it to have is the application compatibiliy thingee XP has. apart from that, I'd marry win2k

I dun' like XP, its way to girly for its own good. Plus its a rip off of MacOS X. Personally I like Linux and if you want your X to be a rip off of other OSs at least they admit they are rip offs . Linux is far more stable than Windows for all applications, plus its free. Windows2K is decent, one of their best OSs released to date, XP is fairly stable, and fairly quick, but it just sucks, dunno why

For the power user, Win2k is the best windows OS by far. And the kernel is still faster. |

I love my XP.
I game, I surf, and I type shit up. Xp lets me do that with ease and speed. Have I ever used 2k? Nope, because I could never get it free..... So I can't say Xp is "teh win" over 2k. But Xp works for me. Plus, I just highly doubt if I switched to 2k, that I would get that much more performance. AND I LIKE MY GIRLY INTERFACE!!!!

I hate that girly cuddly luna interface with passion. The only reason i haven't switched back to 2k is becuase the XP installer cleaned out my backup drive with all my 8gb of backup . I tweak xp to make it look as much as 2k as i can before i even install winrar.

XP what a pretty POS
XP is about the single biggest waste of time I have used. Talk about a screwed up and bloated OS.
Win 2K is still the best OS MS has ever made. Powerful, Stable, Clean. Not Bloated, flaky, and cluttered like XP. thank the heavens they didnt release XP server as they were originally thinking of... NO ONE wants that shit running their company.

No.
No theme can cover up the mistakes MS made. They ****ed the core functions of the OS up far too much to be useable. it takes so ****ing long to do anything cause its all Wizard driven. Which is good for a retard, but when I want to search for files I just want a box to type in text, not 5 min of options to click through. For those who know how to use W2K or any pre XP windows OS, XP just sucks since they move so much of the stuff around. a Theme is just a thing to try and hide XP's flaws, the only way to side step its flaws is to go back to W2K < me> mumbles something about gay startmenu < /me>

I agree with Joe on the search one, it takes 5 ****ing minutes to get to the actual screen you want, which is the one you are greeted with in win95A --> winme

IMHO, Windows 2000 is the ONLY OS m$ ever made that could qualify as 'Very Good'. Win9x/me was unstable and still based off 95 (which was based off DOS). NT was hard to use and didn't have good plug&play.
But then something happened. Its a proven fact that M$ works best when under stiff competition. They realized they had no competiton. (RIP everyone else) So the 'will this work well for all users' got replaced with 'will this make people buy more units'. Thus comes XP. Trying to appease to the n00bs with the five hundred thousand goddamn wizards, eye candy and little rabid dogs that help you with everything, and also trying to lure in the experienced PPL with useful stuff like fast user switching. It didnt work. If it simply had an 'advanced mode' which would turn off each and every wizard and replace it with a normal Setup screen like everyone else uses, it might work. I've recently had the unpleasent experience of setting up two OEM machines (gateway desktop XP Home, and Dell laptop XP Pro) with XP on them. What I think it needs is a '**** Off' button. (yes that is the best way I can describe it, sorry kiddies). When pushed, this button would make the current wizard or MS passport popup go away and never come back, and then show a normal setup screen or uninstall itself if possible. I dont like having to hack the OS to make it work. I dont like having to look for a 'uninstall Messenger hack' just to get rid of that thing telling me to get a fscking Passport every 5 minutes. I know what windows update is, dont tell me about it every 5 minutes. And oh yeah, Office XP is just as bad. The XP Pro laptop needed to get MS Outlook 2000 email transferred off another box. God forbid that I get the normal 'user profile setup' thing in ONE screen, so I can set up the plugins for this guy's Internet Email, Address Book, and then show it where his PST file is. Nooooo. I have to go through a wizard for Email, a wizard to set up the profile, and then a completely different area to set up the PST file... OK I'll stop ranting now. But I think MS has reached the point where they're starting to go backwards. I'm an experienced user and I've used MS products for many years, and with their latest batch I really don't want to upgrade (downgrade?) and much prefer my current system (2000). if M$ keeps this shit up... I think they'll be dead in a few years. Even market momentum can't cover for a bad product. |

I'm sure that the first major update will have an option to turn off all wizards, then I might think about xp
