Default Silver coldplate?

http://becooling.safeshopper.com/11/77.htm?816

Would I see any performance gains over a copper coldplate? I'm guessing I would, but my real concern is that 1/8th inch thick silver cant take the clamping pressure. $40 is a drop in the bucket for me, so price is not an issue. However spending $40 on a coldplate that bends under the slightest pressure is an issue. Does any1 know of somewhere else I can buy silver(preferably thicker)?

Default cold plate

Yea i have seen that before :-/

it is nothing special... you might as well use Copper

the silver is way to expensive and you will not see a dramatic performance boost what so ever

Let's see just how much difference there would be:

Thermal conductivity of PURE metals:

Aluminium - 1460 BTU-in/hr-ft²-°F
Copper - 2670 BTU-in/hr-ft²-°F
Silver - 2910 BTU-in/hr-ft²-°F

Silver is only 9% more thermally conductive than copper. Copper is 82.9% more thermally conductive than Aluminum. It is easy to see why people would choose copper over aluminum, but the price/performance ratio for silver isn't worth it. But hey, I guess if you want a 0.05 to 0.30 degree (rough estimate) decrease in temps, go ahead and get it.

Thanks BoyWonder, and welcome to ProCooling, especially to a fellow Houstonian!

Silver's cost doesn't justify the expense, and the same applies to water cooling, unless one can put a price on an overclock, and silence!

word.

My pelt/wc setup will be about $170. That's with a 226W pelt, home-built PSU, DangerDen4 and a 420gph pump. Building relays myself.

Well there is no doubt about the cost issue.

But a while back at EXtreme systems JCViggen and several other overclocking gurus were disscussing the use of silver vs. copper.

The real world performance they reported was more than shown here, several C improvement.

Not that a couple C is a lot, or would make a huge differance in your O/C. But if you are looking for the last possible mhz. from pelt use then it may well be worth it to you.
