Erm, wtf has happened to this peltier?
Woo!!! my first peltiers! I got 3 fot $10! Anyhow, i only looked at 2 of them, because they were wrapped up well(2 of the 3 were identical). When I got home from the swapfest and unwrapped the one I hadnt previously inspected, it had some weird mettalic looking stuff the same color as the thermoelectric junks but paper thin and all over the place. On inspecting it more, it looks like someone flipped over the coldplate/peltier assembly and powered it, thus not having a cooled hot side killing it, I powered it for a few seconds, and sure as hell the hot side was on the bottom. But it that means it works right? there is no visible damage to the junctions. I have yet to test the 3rd(small one with copper coldplate).
all 3 units, one powered frosty! fuxxored or not? Last edited by hydrogen18; 07-25-2003 at 10:03 PM. |

Welp, answered my own Q about an hour after posting this...It turns out the metallicy looking stuff is thermal compound. A little removal of that spray on insulation stuff and I found I was able to remove the peltier with the aid of a knife. A quick test since the peltier isnt fully "potted". Yep, hot on the heatsink side, cold on the other. Unfortunately, my C-clamp managed to do this. The smallest one is apparently very well epoxied to its heatsink as when I tried to slip a knife under it,all i did was crack the ceramic. O well, itll make a good demonstration piece. My next Q: how should I pot a pelt, can I just smear thermal white goop stuff up into it to seal it well? |

nope swapfest, the smallest one is a hot seller on ebay though. The 2 big ones pull 5 amps each, the smallest one pulls 5 amps. This is kind of low isnt it?

It sounds like a 60-80w pelt. Which cant be used for cpu, but works fine for some gpu.

had a lil fun... I used cheapo white paste between the coldpate and heatsink, then used pipe compoung to pot and insulate the peltier(removable, I need to get some RTV silicone.) ---edit--- and some more.... Last edited by hydrogen18; 07-27-2003 at 05:25 PM. |

Hey bro, all is not lost. If you could give me some specs, I may be able to give you a BETTER solution to a single pelt setup. If you were to make a multi-pelt (2 or 4) setup, you MAY get BETTER temps than with one alone. I'm not talking about stacking. Mount them side by side in parallel, and you may see some pretty good temps. Here's the info I need:
1. Qmax (maximun heat transfer) 2. (delta)Tmax (maximum temp difference) 3. Imax (max current) 4. Vmax (max voltage) While i'm making the calculations, you see if you could fit 2 or 4 pelts on your system. This may require modifying the coldplate. If they are all the same exact pelts, you may be able to find them (or ones very similar) on my website. The cold side temps are listed there. Here's the link. Note the parameters for the calculations though. Oh, I'll need some rough estimates of your setup too. Here's the req's: 1. Processor 2. Temp of water 3. Quality of WCooler (eg: cheap, mid, hi-performance) PS - I'm not making any promises

actually, i should be getting a 172 watt unit. layout will be as follows
Cpu - 172 watt unit Gpu - 72 watt unit(may upgrade) Northbridge - 72 watt unit The 2x 5 amp units with big heatsinks will be used as waterchillers. May not do much, but cant hurt imho. |
